I’ve got a couple of M45 and M46s lying around. All but one has the reverse switch on the LHS and the same looking alloy top. But one of the M45s is different. The reverse switch is on the right side and the alloy top looks taller. Any ideas what it is?

Is it actually an m400 series box from a 164? They have the switch in a couple of different locations.

I don't think I've ever seen a M400. Here are some photos of it. It's got what looks like a 240 series shift linkage.

If the bellhousing diameter is bigger than the other boxes then it is 164. Otherwise they came out for 1 year, 1970, in a P1800.

I don’t have the bell housing for it. The one on it is a Frankenstein to mount a M45/46 behind a B20. Years ago I planned to do that in the 144 rally car but did the Toyota W58 swap instead.

Did the P1800 box have that 240 type remote shift?

Roinik

I believe all P1800 have the remote shifter.

So did 72+ 140s. But the M40/1 boxes had a long metallic cover with a plastic cover underneath, and there's more than one version of that shifter extension. From experience on 140s, '74 M40 shifter extensions are quite different from '73 models.

M45/6/7 had a frame-like affair bolted to the rear of the box, and these were different depending if they were 4 or 6 pot, Diesel or petrol, 240 or 700/900.

@jrhendo do you have the part number of the gearbox in question? It's on a little plate on the underside of the box, usually near the output flange on an M45.

Sorry Bob, no id plate. The only numbers I could find were the ones on the photo above on the side of the box and the ones in the photo below. They were between the output flange and the shifter frame.

And I also found the input shaft is hollow. I know this because I turned the box on end to take the photo and there was a pool of ATF (I assume) on the floor when I turned it back.

If the input shaft was hollow, wouldn't there be a hole in the end you can look into? If you turn the box vertical, you could have just had ATF coming past the seals.

There was a hole in the middle, but it’s only small and I didn’t think to look up it. Plust it had oil in it.

I felt around the shaft and I’m sure it was dry. I’ll poke a bit of wire up the hole later.

You’re right. The shaft isn’t hollow. It must have leaked past the seal.
