  • XC70 T6 - why so rare and where to find?

I've been on the lookout for a 2012-2015 T6 for some time now on the usual channels - carsales, carsguide and gumtree.

Not even one listing over that time, and from memory I think I've only seen two XC70s from that period - one 3.2L petrol and one D5.

There appear to be plenty of 2008-2010 models, especially in the standard 3.2 petrol.

As a newcomer, can someone fill me in on the dynamics here i.e. why there are so few around.

And if anyone has further thoughts on where to find one that would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Q

Best bet is get a late 3.2 , a T6 and all its electronics and swap it in.

Its been done with a D5 ( and a V70 converted to V8 from S80V8) so time and money......

Its not worth it esp with all that goes wrong with them anyway.

There were no T6's in the XC70 until MY14.

I do find the chronology a bit confusing, but I was under the impression there was a My13 version

Just to clarify - are you referring to the reliability of the T6 engine or the XC70 in general?

      The d5 are excellent

The 3.2 and t6 are of acceptable reliability but have a number of issues where if they occur... the solution is replace entire engine for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The cars when over 150,000k (already ten years old'ish) have failures of electronic components that are usually a $1200+ part then towed to dealer for coding.

The transmission is good and can be updated with some expensive valve controller from America but ultimately an expensive repair when it fails.

Rear Haldex fails in a few ways , just the bearing cost me over $2k to have done with bush on front of diff too.

On an XC the suspension is taller and puts more stress on general wera items more so than non XC.

T6 motor WILL start smoking on declaration like a Mack truck and oil consumption increases, currently mine just went from not bad at all to weekly top up from below the lower line on dipstick.....218,000 KLM. Ive got all the bushes and link rods and suspension mounts to do, very expensive too plus fitting cost.

In reality I bought a 130K km car knowing it needed stuff done but with the engine issue I should have dumped it when Haldex needed done.

      It's leaking btw too......

Plus what sounds like a wheel bearing.

Im going to dump the thing for a Mercedes ML500. Sure things go wrong with them but I know it's going to be a better marque to drive than modern Volvo is ,in all ways.

I'll miss the T6 zooooom and fun but I'm tired of low, cramped v60 as well.

D5 is ok in our S80 but painful turbo lag (after the instant light switch T6) the fact the swirl flaps will need fixing at great expense, the EGR needs cleaning again , the module failures and ongoing niggles with window, wipers, blowing rear globes, dead 12v sockets that there's nothing wrong with.......the 4C suspension is rubbish and needs fronts at $1400 plus fitting at only 130,000klm.

If you don't want a constant list of issues buy a Subaru Outback.

      Or a Kluger.

Thanks all for the feedback - appreciate your time

Theres an XC70 3.2 here in Melbourne for under $9K.

Good candidate for T6 swap , all electronic components need to be swapped I imagine.

Unless you do it all yourself it's not really worth it.
