lv740 Hi , my 89 240 is not correcting after taking a corner and has to be corrected and cantered manually .not long after I bought it it I had to have the steering rack replaced . I had a wheel alignment done straight after this but it didn’t help the steering not returning to centre. The steering seems heavy but there is no whinging or noisehas anyone had this issue thanks in advance
ramrod Jack the front of the car up, turn the steering wheel with the wheels off the ground, it should be easy to do
VolvoHordz Do what @ramrod suggests and whilst you are under there, check the ball joints.Perhaps wrong style of ball joints. The ball joints for a power steering 240 are meant to be angled, where as a 240 with a manual rack are straight.Google pictures and it should make sense. My understanding is that the ball joints intended for a 240 with manual steering will make the steering feel lighter and it wont self correct as well.
lv740 Hi all, took a look at the joints, here's better summary of the above:Jacked front wheels up and the steering tension goes away. No difference between when the engine is on or off.@ramrod If the stiffness goes away once the wheels are off the ground, does this point to the rack/pump? Or something else?Turning completely to each, side we hear the power steering whine, otherwise haven't noticed any particular noise yet.Attached photos of the ball joints. They're angled, so I think we're running the correct power steering joints (Example here).Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Essbos Just thinking, have your strut top bearings ever been replaced? They could be failing leading to heavy steering when the wheels are loaded, then when jacked up (bearings unloaded) allow the steering to move more freely.

ramrod Check the rubber of the strut top mounts, if they're old looking and or cracked, replace them anyway
