I've been looking for a cheap efficient 4x4 to daily, and it came down to 4JB1T powered Rodeo space cabs or Disco Tdis. Thanks to @PaddlerEd for finding and arranging the sale, and @jonbot for working on it and storing it for months over lockdown.

It's a 1997 Discovery 1 with the 300Tdi 2.5 turbo diesel and R380 5 speed manual, 261,000km. The paint is a bit rough but the panels are straight, interior is tidy, it drives really well and came with a full service history.

Initial plans are some slightly larger tyres on steel wheels, a light bar, a head unit with bluetooth, less mufflers, and to take a less horrible photo of it.

Bloke I'm working for has one of these he bought to use the front panels to fix his $500 V8 version. It had rear damage.

Says the TDi motor looks like it has head off for work, and ran very quietly , the whole thing is available cheap in Broadford VIC.

Or go there, pull what you want , Rod is easy to on with.

Apparently the timing belt is pretty mission critical on that diesel it’s a must do every 80000 km. That engine should be pretty robust. I nearly bought one but it would fit under my concrete carport (=patio). By about 10 mm! ! Pajero instead …

Before you do anything, fit a low coolant alarm!!!

These have a bad habit of getting slow leaks in the cooling system then the first thing you know is it sounds a bit funny... then the temp gauge suddenly goes to the top, and before you've even pulled over the engine is toast.

    Been there, done that...

Got a ride in it last night including some night time off roading

Gets my approval for comfort and ability as a totaly stock vehicle

Thanks, I'll look into that. The black expansion tank is definitely annoying, as it means the level can't be checked unless the engine is cold.

        Is it?

        It is....

Centre muffler replaced with 2.5" pipe and 9" hotdog, rear muffler deleted. It sounds less like a tractor than I anticipated.

Installed a set of Kings 7" LED driving lights. For $130 including wiring harness, these are pretty impressive.

I'll have to take a video when see you and the rig. I want to convince my dad to loose some of the mufflers on his disco.

So.... time for 31" tyres, lift kit and lockers yet? Haha

When it comes to bigger tyres, there are steering lock stops on the axle ends that can be adjusted. Ended up with more lock on my dads disco compared to its previous poorly adjusted setup.

I've picked up a set of 245/75R16 mud tyres and a set of Disco steelies that need painting, but I can't decide on a colour.

Thanks for the tip. I'm hoping I don't lose too much lock, it's amazing stock.

        Here's the video:

Sounds good and actually not all that loud.

Yeah it's quieter than I expected, especially from inside. The little hotdog gives it a nicer note than the usual 4 cylinder tractor noises you get from a straight pipe, and I think fitting it in the middle rather than at the back probably helps too.
