Have you got the thing charging at home on controlled load?
We have our hot water system on a controlled load circuit (~20 cents/kWh).
We usually charge either from midnight to 4AM (~9.5 cents/kWh special EV rate) or during the day when we have excess solar...our off-peak rate (~19 cents/kWh) runs from 9PM-midnight and 4AM-3PM, and our peak rate (~29 cents/kWh) runs from 3PM-9PM. We avoid charging during peak times.
Because we only use the provided 10-amp cable at home, the charge rate is about 10% in the 4 hour midnight-4AM window. If we need more than that, we just charge any time except peak, but prioritise using excess solar if we can.
We've considered getting a wallbox installed to allow a bit higher charge rate, but it doesn't make any sense with our current driving patterns and electricity usage...plus we only have single-phase 40 amp supply to the whole house, so we wouldn't be able to charge at more than maybe 20 amps without the risk of exceeding the 40 amp breaker capacity I suppose.
I just tallied up the charging cost for the Canberra trip - it was about $125 for 1400 km trip. We had 2 charges at NRMA free chargers (Albury & Jugiong) on the way up and 42 kWh from our slow charge at the hotel car park while we were in Canberra.
