I don't have FB and don't need it. To many fake and false people so I agree totally all of that is avoided on here

Spac

Yeah, so one of the things that is great about this forum is that it avoids the dumbest parts of FB - including the sedan vs wagon crap.

Mate you’re in the wrong thread. It’s all about wagons being better than sedans here.

@VolvoMike would a new pressure plate for an m90 be suitable? Im pretty sure one of my customers has one left over from a 740 manual swap

Possibly. My 20 valve NA car has a 230mm clutch disc and cover but need a 240mm pressure plate like the 850R has.

I'm pretty sure he ended up with a Franken-clutch setup. Flat redblock flywheel with upgraded falcon pressure plate and 850r clutch disc. He's going to dig it out for me today I'll let you know

So I ordered a new twin plate clutch kit that I'll need later.... hopefully it can hold all the powers and torques that the 20 valve naturally aspirated can throw at it!!!

I was given a used XR5 clutch kit and flywheel which has been fitted to the engine and hopefully back in the car over the weekend.

By my calculations, there’s a fair chunk of money in that. :)

XR5 fitment?

They're cheap compared to the sequential that will ultimately end up in the car... I blame @timbo as he is a bad influence on my wallet. They suit the S60R along with a few others but no need to acknowledge Ford fitment in a Volvo.

So... it's all done!! I now have a 6 speed 850 driving.

Using the S60R mechanism on the XR5 box puts the gears the correct way and drilling out the ball for the sideways gate movement makes it work perfectly with the standard 850 gearshift lever with no other modifications required.

Is the s60r box mechanism going to be the same as the other m66 volvos?

So shifter cradle and cables are 850?

All the P2 manual M66's will have the same mechanism, petrol or diesel won't matter or you can make your own and shorten up the shift from odds to evens. Modifying the XR5 cable ball end to take the 850 cable makes the cross gate narrow but it feels nice. It would be possible to increase the height of the cross gate mechanism to widen it if preferred.

Nothing inside the car was changed and original 850 cables are used.

I cut up the M56 cable mounts and cut off the XR5 cross gate mount (left hole) and welded the M56 in the exact same spot. It would be possible to grind out the hole to suit the 850 cable but this was quicker. The throw cable mount was then welded after centering the shifter inside the car. I'll compare it to the S60R cable bracket but the gearbox will come with one so no need to buy an extra part.

The thermostat on the airbox had to be removed as the S60R mechanism hits it but it still just touches the underneath side of the airbox. I plan on making my own short shifter so it won't be an issue.

Ask for the clutch line to be included with the gearbox you buy as you'll need it to modify the original M56 one to work.

Nice work , thanks for the thorough information, be good to see the car up and driving

I've had a short shifter on my S60R for over 10 years so gave that a go in the 850 with a different modified bracket to align the cable... it's now a much firmer shift too so will fit all that to my 850R.

5th/6th gate now fixed... rather than the external piece of metal, I decided it was better to fit a spring into the gear shift cartridge to help find the 5th/6th gate. It now has a positive feel when you're in the gate rather than going too far towards reverse.

Good solution for the lack of shifter mounted reverse lockout

@VolvoMike

Would you be doing a kit in the future for the conversion or consider it ?

It's probably too hard to put a kit together. I barely have enough time to do what I have to... my 850R was painted 2 years ago and still hasn't been touched.

Maybe a list would do for those who want ,can afford and have the ability to do the job.

I've had this drawn up and have seen a laser engraver who says they can laser etch through layers of paint.... I'm hoping this will work to keep the factory look of the original gear shift lever.
