M46 crossmember to suit 7/900 series

Gday everyone,

I'm in the process of doing an m46 swap on my 940 (I know, I know).

I've got all the bits together for the swap, Frank O'Grady's here in WA said they'd be able do the swap for me.

My Question: What crossmember will I need to mount my M46 to my 940? I couldn't find a 740 M46 for the life of me, the 240 crossmember apparently wont suit. The M47 crossmember looked like it may work but I'm unsure.

I've considered going the custom fabrication route, but I've been told recently that the AW70 auto crossmember will work?

Can anyone confirm this? I'm 99% sure that's what I've got in my car (1993 940 GLE, 3spd+OD)

Any advice (with pictures plz) would be much appreciated :)

A bit of cut and shut on existing one with some 3.00mm sheet added. MIG it and paint!

Yeah, they do it for all sorts of motor/gearbox swaps .

Otherwise UK may be an option but wouldn't be any left due to rust.....

There is (at least) two types of auto crossmembers in 940s. Depending on your type the easiest way may be to change the gearbox mount.

Your car probably has a AW71 currently.

What model is the M46 out of?

I thought the AW71 was for turbo models only but I'm probably wrong haha

And my M46 is from a 240, I bought of a guy who had it as a replacement box for his 242 gt. It has the J-Type overdrive if that helps.

Also cheers for that Image, it appears my GB mount would require xmember (1), which looks very similar to the M47 xmember

They usually have stamped "AW7..." on the LHS of the box ?

You've probably got all the mounting parts if you've got #1 already!

Other traps for young players is shifter location (940 is further rearward than 240) and gearbox output flange as there are a good few different ones and that will impact driveshaft selection.

Probably cut and shut on the shifter cage and selector rod? Although Adam at Frank O'Grady's didn't say anything about incorrect shifter position so we'll see

Pretty sure I saw a #1 style crossmember at @Vee_Que house a couple weeks ago in Melb - maybe he’d sell it? As I mentioned on FB, the one(s) I had are the #2 style mount, which doesn’t suit the angled solid rubber 240 style gearbox mount.

Sorry, those photos are a bit hard to make out. Is that the shifter cage and selector rod from a 740 m46? If so Ill PM you and get your details just incase I need to go that route

It's the shifter cage and trans mount bracket from a 7/9 series m46. The shifter itself I don't have nor the selector rod.

I can snap you a few pictures tomorrow to clarify if that's helpful.
