Good.

It will fail severely and take out the belt and the top end making your xc70 worth $500

The mechanic (which I won't be going to anymore) tells me the water pump is fine its just the gasket or something that has a slow leak out of it...
I checked the water and oil, both good :)
Ex850R
Its a wonder you know where to find them!?

Is it bad that I looked on the 850 first and then hoped that the dipstick and everything would be in the same spot on the V70 (which it was)?
I just don't want to ruin this one haha. I know you can't ruin it just by checking the oil and water but it gets serviced regularly enough and apparently it has no leak bad enough to cause any concern....

Random question, I noticed that >2003 models have a key that looks like this, I have a key with a separate remote, but my remote has the same buttons in the same order. Is it possible to order a flip key and get it coded for my car? Just now I have three volvos the keys are starting to get bulky....

Yeah Ive seen those, the problem I see is that I have a separate key and remote, as in I don't need the remote at all, just the key, cos the key has the transponder for the immobiliser in it, so how do I get that out of the key and into the remote, along with the remote circuit board as well?

Thats awesome! I will invest in this (after I accumulate some money, I did just buy my third Volvo of this year after all lol!)
Thanks so much!!
I have a spare key anyway so if I mess up it will be okay until I can get it fixed!

Make sure you buy the later model key with the integrated key chain lug.
Like this:
Those earlier style keys (with the metal key chain loop in the corner) have a habit of pulling apart.
Especially when you have split the casing.
Various wreckers in the US (via ebay) have a abundance of unused flip keys from damaged cars.
But the downside is most of these have the keys cut already.

Ended up with three, I bought the original version with the metal key chain loop in the corner for like $12, and then after your advice I bought another two, I could only get a set of two, that is the later version, both uncut, so all up its cost me like $45 but still, Ill use the cheap one from china as the 'practice' one lol

There are a lot of oils out there and different sales teams that mix the oils so you don't know what your really getting,we use a Nissan brand of oil in the trannys

My transmission problems are certainly getting worse, with the flaring occurring more frequently, and even occurs now in both manual mode and regardless of the temperature of the car. It still happens less when it is cold than when it is hot but for the most part it plays up a lot, still mostly when it costs but it even flares changing gear when accelerating, only on third gear, either going in or out of it. Im assuming this is heading down big money territory (either a Valve body or a full rebuild) which I can't afford. I still need to take the car in to get its software checked, it probably needs another fluid flush (Im getting Mark to do it this time!) but is there anything else I can do to help smooth it out a bit and stretch the tranny. Also, if I get the tranny rebuilt or valve body replaced or whatever needs doing, what kind of lifespan can I expect out of that? Will the new parts last longer than the somewhat problematic old parts or will the fail in the same rate?
Ex850R
Do the fluid change and software and see how it goes. Maybe you could do a manual conversion if it came to dead auto. Sounds like cheaper than fixing an auto.
jaykenneally
Yeah Ill try... Bloody hell now Ill have to call the dealer haha. If they give me any trouble Im gonna lose it! Ill have to call Berry and get it in for yet another fluid change... When I get money. City driving is killing this car.... Cant wait to get the other V70 going because frankly I don't give a crap about how that one drives as long as it does haha.
Yeah I am considering a manual conversion, this will become the weekend/hobby car anyway so I won't mind it as much... Does manual work good with the AWD? And can I put a 6 speeder on it or only 5?
Ex850R
Mmm , now the V50 came in AWD T5 in limited numbers , I wish I had cash to buy one a while back but it was auto AFAIK , you need the angle gear off the gearbox so would have to be from the V50 AWD , Mark may know how many manuals , if any were brought in.
Mike has a good gearbox in an XC at Jonbots place ........
jaykenneally
You guys are so good with your part-hunting knowledge haha, always seem to know where everything is lmao. Im 98% sure I saw a V50 AWD gearbox on eBay, 6 speeder manual but wasnt sure if it would fit an XC70
Ex850R
You can make anything fit.
jaykenneally
Lol true but remember Im a broke uni student and I figure the easier the job the less cost!
