Inga on the Dyno

I took Inga to Chiptorque today to have her horses checked. Here she is on the Dyno ready and willing:

I expected most of the horses to have left (given that she is from 1990) but I was pleasantly surprised. Here's her 2nd run:

As you can see there's still 76kWs coming out the back wheels which is not too shabby for a 2.3l DOHC non-aspirated Volvo with an auto transmission. The B234F engine is rated at 114kW.

I also spoke to the owner about having a Dyno day for our Volvos. It can be arranged but we need at least 15+ cars at the price of $80 each. My "Power Run" cost me $125.

Wow. That's 20 les at the wheels than a 740t has in dead stock condition. Do you run it on 98 octane as I understand the 16v responds well in driving to the higher octane fuel.

Yes, I'm running 98. I did the run for two reasons. Firstly I have never done this on a vehicle I've owned and secondly as a benchmark if I ever get around to supercharging Inga.

The 740t is 119kW at the fly so getting 96kW at the wheels is pretty good. Is that in a manual? The 740 8V is only 85kW at the fly.

I'd like to know what the other Volvos do and I may get my 960 done if we have a Dyno day.

That's with an auto car yes. My Wagon makes 136rwkw on a 36 degree day last I ran it. Lots of auto 240s I've seen on the Dyno make between 60 and 70rwkws.

Can someone help me out here and give me the formula to convert kw to bhp, never worked in kw might as well be Chinese :)

kw x 1.341 = bhp

bhp x 0.745 = kw

Google also does the calculations for you ;P
85kw at the fly? That doesn't sound quite right?

114kw at the flywheel through an auto should produce about 80rwkw... I would say it is not doing to bad.

Jay, I'm assuming that the figures listed for the engines in Wiki are at the fly as that's my understanding of how they are usually stated.

Rob, I was surprised at the performance to be honest. I was expecting it to be in the 50-60 range as the motor has 210k on it. It looks like it has been well looked after before my ownership.

I was talking to the guy who did the power run and on one run it was 70kW and the next it was 76kW. He thought that some carbon might have got cleaned out of the system during the first run. I usually don't have the engine running up to 6,000rpm in 2nd gear!

The turbo fly figure seems low for the 8v 95-100kw@fly seems more appropriate?

I would like to get a bench mark from where mine is ATM, then after the kit is installed.

Jay, I suspect he is saying the following

8V NA 85kw@flywheel = 60kw@wheels
16V NA 114kw@flywheel = 79kw@wheels
8V Turbo 119kw@flywheel = 83kw@wheels

Well, I'm thinking that maybe Wiki might be a bit off here.
I've just looked at a 1989 Owners Manual I have and there are specs for engines listed in the back. Here's a scan:

There's a B230FT rated at 115kWs and a B230ET rated at 134kWs.

Jay, I just don't know.
It is a 740 Owners Manual so I presume that it is only listing engines that go in that year's 740.
There were two versions of the 740 turbo, a low boost one and a high boost one.

The waters are further muddied by the USA models which seems to have different power outputs to the OZ and Euro models.

Nope, FT is from 86 onwards, 93 onwards FT's have squirters, they changed turbos and cams and manifolds over the years but the power doesn't really move.

And what I had said is that I've seen STOCK 740 Turbo sedans on the dyno made around 94-96rwkws, modified ones easily go up over 100 with an exhaust.

I can't find the results of the dyno day that did have the stock one though, the volvo vic site seems to have gotten rid of them. But looking through old Rolling mags, Mark iceton's old 960 SE made 87rwkw on a dyno and another one made 78rwkws.
