Yeah, you try it. I have one to exchange ported usually available as usual when you're done.
Like I said, spool time decreased for me going from the same turbo and manifold but now ported. This is because they are tiny and a big restriction to flow on the engine so yes it can improve velocity, but only if there was no restriction to its flow!
I guess that will remain to be seen. Ive done a bunch of reading that has people advocating either option so there has to be merit to both setups.
Anyway, today I started working on the 16t while I wait for a manifold to turn up. Ive ordered a forge cbv, the forge compensation valve and the mamba hotside housing. While I wait for those parts I decided to tackle a job ive been ignoring for quite a while mainly due to being mildly afraid of fucking up.
That job is popping out the freeze plug on the 16t and tapping the coolant lines so its more compatible with the rwd setup. The 16t I have is a late model with the coolant lines on the same side and while ive been able to make it work, it puts the line very close to the manifold and makes it a bit of a pain to clock the turbo correctly.
Armed with my trusty punch and tap set I was able to pop out the plug and cut some new threads. Operation seemed to go ok. Now I have to find a low profile bolt to plug the old hole.
Next job is when lockdown ends up here ill hit up the local steel supplier to get some steel plate so I can make a new wastegate bracket, get that fitted up and then clean the turbo up and fit it back to the car.
