So my son who's just turned 16 has jumped on Manheim and purchased his first Volvo, Manual 850 AWD. He'll be needing a list of parts to fix it up, but in the meantime I was hoping someone on here might know the car and any history on it.

Old REG: NSW CU83QI

Was written off by Shannon's.

Yes, a guy who frequents this forum mentioned it to me a few days ago - said his car was coming up for auction at mannheims. Was offered 1300 on a buy back but wasn't interested. Looked for it on mannheims listings but could not find it. When I saw it 6 weeks ago it was in perfect order but unregistered and at the time the guy offered offered to sell me the tailshaft. Weird how it has ended up at mannheims when it was an unregistered car 6 weeks ago. Said there were other mech issues too numerous and pricey to fix so was happy to sell me the tailshaft but wanted $1200 just for the tailshaft. I was only asking him about the car again today and he said it had been sold for an amount he did not wish to disclose. Different stories each time I spoke to him..... hope it works out OK for you.

manual box and a near new awd shaft would have been worth $1400 to keep it and sell the other parts on ozvolvo. Lack of space and too many cars and complaining neighbours were the real problem in keeping the car I think.

That's good to know some details, although they sound sketchy. The actual car is overall pretty good for age. Engine is sweet. Suspect clutch, but that's a wear item if it's dead so be it. No obvious mechanical issues other than that.

I assumed REG was cancelled along with the Shannon's write off. It's got details on windscreen; Shannon's 9000 2018 (?) obvious total loss....

Anyways, she's not a total loss and will roll again. Start bid was 1500 and my son had to outbid first bidder to get it at $1525 (plus 2-300 in fees). Even then it didn't meet RES and they took a few days till they decided to process it.

RE your mention of near new AWD shaft was this something the PO mentioned?

Another reason I'm hoping to reach out to the PO is my son is obviously on a tight restoration budget (3K, including purchase, repair and possible clutch)..... The PO may be holding the second key, something not in his budget.

It wasn't registered at the time as far as I know. Was parked on the road.

That fender/suspension damage wasn't there when I saw it early/mid January.

Car was parked in a narrow street in Castlle Hill. It is my bet someone ran into it in that street which may have been a godsend if it had issues and it was well insured

My knowledge of this car is only because the PO contacted me on this forum with a view to sell me the tailshaft and viscous coupling. He said he paid a well respected tailshaft specialist to fit and balance the custom made shaft. I think he said it cost him $1800 to get that done. When I asked him why he wanted to part the shaft out he said there were a few other things wrong with the car that did not make it economic to keep and didn't seem to want to elaborate. He is an older gentleman and not keen for too much diy any more. I think he said he had done an engine swap on that car. I was not prepared to pay $1200 for the tailshaft and it was only this week that I made contact again, only to find he had disposed of the car. I think you must have bought the car before I knew it was at mannheims. I probably would have bidded but not at that price because I only wanted a couple of parts and dont have time to deal with selling off the wreck.

Clutch seemed ok - he had to reverse up onto the kerb so I could get a look at and measure the tailshaft. It was a perfect fit for my early bird V70R so if you ever decide to part out the tailshaft let me know,

He is a volvo buff and frequents this site. I will PM him and let him know you are keen to talk.

Actually as I finish writing this I think his problem with the car was overheating. He said it was fine while running but when the car was turned off it would bubble up out of the expansion tank. My v70R does the same thing since I bought it 2 years ago. Its not a head gasket issue as the car has done 30000 with no visible changes. Have replaced water pump, thermostat , hoses, radiator and still no change in its behaviour. Just learnt to live with it , leave it running for minute on stopping as that seems to settle it down and I carry a litre of coolant just in case. occasionally bubbles over and ppl tell me there's water coming out of the car!

Thanks Boxy, that's awesome information. Yes if the PO is willing to help with any background (and may still have the second key) my son will be very appreciative. Things like timing belt history may save him out laying big $$ prematurely.

I tried to reverse it onto the car trailer and she kept revving out to 2500 RPM and not wanting to go up the ramps, she did after a little runup on attempt 3 or 4. I gave her a run up and down a town street and no slippage under normal use, no overheating or anything unusual. No coolant or oil mixing. If he was older and no longer a DIY was perhaps getting tired of workshop bills...

Very bizarre the fact she was unregistered at time of accident. It looks as though it was soft enough to have been done parked other than the RH control arm is bent and RH front tyre burst. I'm no expert, but have dealt with several wrecks with bent suspension and destroyed tyres/ wheels, always assumed they'd taken a good and proper hit to burst tyres and bend suspension.

The car will owe my son around 4K before she's registerable not including any mechanical work, so hoping if there's anything major it's something he can delay several months. RE the bidding, I thought Manheim were VERY cheeky starting the bid at $1500 with a RES, but being a black Manual my son saw value in it.

    Cheers

    Congratulations on winning it!

Your son will learn a lot about cars helping Dad fix it up.

Just 10 years ago my son bought his first car at 18. I wouldnt let him get his own car until he finished the HSC and started work.

He said no way he was going to drive a volvo 850 and wanted an unmolested manual MR2 SW20 Bathurst edition. He found one with low k's and immaculate condition but had to pay big bucks for it. Other than routine maintenance it hasn't seen any mechanical work.

So we found a project car to keep him busy - a non-going registered Mr2 for 2k . That plus the work he did on designing an aluminium bulkhead for an FSAE car while studying mechanical enginnering at Sydney UNI has initiated him to thje world of cars.

He still has the Mr2- still immaculate and garaged at his grandmas with a trickle charger - he hasn't driven it in 9 months!

Because after 5 years of study and after doing a stint at Trivett BMW and Lotus Sports cars working with mechanics and engineers he out of the blue just bought a black manual 97 V70R as his daily driver. I said why this car? Because it's cool! Uses it to cart his mountain bikes around in heads off to the blue mountains or snowies in it whenever he can. Loves it!! Better than the MR2!

Now I get to drive the Mr2 occasionally and that car is a hoot.

    Must have been @Brehon47 car

    My lips are sealed

Just noticed further up you mentioned complaining neighbours as a reason for not taking it on.... I was almost attacked whilst unloading it by some lunatic in Croydon telling me nobody in the street likes you, you know that! "We are going to get restricted parking here to stop you"...

Why can't people get a bloody life and mind their own friggin business. If I want to have 50 cars that's my perogative, and this one's not even mine ?

I had an unregistered vintage caravan parked on the street in front of the house for a few months.

Someone complained and council slapped a sticker on it and gave me 30 days to move it. Guy at council was cool about it and said just get it registered and you can park it wherever you like. Which is exactly what I did.

Going through the message thread your PO had a long history of issues with neighbours. You would get on with him well by sharing your neighbour stories.

Never knew we got the AWD 850 locally, is it a N/A or turbo model?

And how is the project coming along?

They were all low pressure turbo engines

And how is the project coming along?

Some research shows that there were only a little over two hundred worldwide and a believed 57 delivered to Australia, all Manual and as @timbo mentioned all LPT, which isn't a bad thing. But we'll see where the project heads and how much time and money my son wants to put into it. Perhaps if the clutch is an issue that may be an opportunity to put in a T5 donk.

So far he's stripped it all down by himself on an afternoon study break, done some fluid maintenance as well as compiled a parts list and located some parts sources (and raided dad's tools). Shouldn't be too difficult to put right once all the parts are acquired.

Anyway, this thread has served its purpose (Thanks @ICEDVOVO for the help) as I've located the friendly previous owner who has offered to help out with information and a few other things.

Not sure if my son will be putting a project thread up here or anywhere else, but I'll be having fun watching him learn and helping him with whatever I can and I'm sure he'll be having fun in what is a pretty cool car.

I'll close this one off and look forward to an update thread as to the progress of the resurrection.
