So the inevitable has finally happened... The transmission in my 2000 V70R is in need of a rebuild or replacement.

Is there anyone you guys can recommend in Tasmania, North-West coast if possible, to recondition the transmission?

I have had some poor experiences with local mechanics, none willing to work on it or do anything more than change the fluids and read codes, and I called the dealership in Launceston recently who actually told me to call another local mechanic as they only work on newer models.

At this stage as a last resort I would be willing to try dropping the transmission out myself and sending it interstate, I just have no idea as to who or where... I suppose it would be better to find somewhere who specialises in transmissions.

Thanks in advance.

Well , it is the notorious 5spd auto that has a history of failures all around but im sure Berry Motor Group knows someone who builds them or could help with another , they may even have one you could get rebuilt to save time and shipping of yours back n forth so talk to them.

I will give Mark a call, I have mentioned it in passing to him and he suggested converting to manual which sounds perfect but doesn't solve the logistics issue of getting a busted car on the spirit etc etc etc.

There are lots of ovlovers in Tassie , surely a shout out can bring them to your aid??

Bit involved with swap but would help the power as the auto kills the HP.

There is a transmission place just out of Launceston in Perth that has a good reputation for rebuilds and older cars, nearby that car place that sells older prestige cars in the main street. I understand that it's usually a few months wait. I've never used it myself.

Following it because I am from Hadspen, south of Launnie. Please let me know if you find one. Cheers mate

Nothing yet - have spoken to a few companies, nobody willing to take it in. I also called Mark at Berry a few times and he suggested swapping in a 4 speed box, but he hasn't called me back and I have left a few messages now, so not really sure what else there is to do. Probably scrap it and cut my losses.

Well I dont know how your mechanical skills are but if you scrap it anyway, whats the harm in open it and have a crack at it yourself?

If you dont want to do it. let me know. I will give it a go if you want. I am a mechanical fitter and maybe I can get it right.

What exactly was the issue anyway with it??

I have a transmission from a 2001 build xc70 under my house. It had about 205k on it and worked on removal. Are these the same?

I also have one from a 2001 t5 fwd in Melbourne that I also no longer need. It was attached to a low km engine I wanted at the time. I don't know the condition.

Might either of them help as they are not in my future plans any more.

There should be a tag on the tranny with the type of the tranny......50-AW 42 i.e and the name of the company. For the 850 it was a japanese company..Aikin ...

Thanks guys - it takes a long time to shift into 1st and when it does its a big shunt, when it actually drives it just wont hold a gear and shudders trying to hold gear etc. It's pretty bad. I just called Mark at Berry again, see if I can get more details on the 4 speed swap... he has given my number to a chap in Adelaide, hopefully this leads somewhere.

@Elk I'm OK with trying to rebuild it once it has been removed from the vehicle, my issue is I have a single carport down a steep drive, once it's up on stands it isn't moving again easily. Would take me a long time to figure out how to drop the subframe and remove the trans... not fair on the other half when she is the one ferrying kids around etc. Located in Burnie as well so not ideal.

@1971_144GL I think the current trans is Aisin AW55-50SN. The XC70 trans might be similar if you can find a part number on it somewhere?

@vvvolvooo : Ah ok.....no it takes ome time to remove the tranny from the engine bay. You dont have to drop the subframe but you most likely would need an engine hoist or something similar and it is a tight fit. It would be easier to get both engine and tranny as one unit out but that is not a job for a carport.

I hope it works out for you!!!!

@1971_144GL Holy dooley. I don't know much but that looks like it might do the trick... have messaged you.

@Elk Thanks, shall see what happens!

BTW folks, the gearbox place in Perth is Harry's Gearboxes and Diffs, in Main St, across the road from an awesome cafe. He has my Tremec T5 at present, I booked it in with Harry back in January. He work is excellent, which is why his services are much in demand.

I get them rebuilt all the time then fit cooler to them what happens mostly is the internal drum wears causing most issues.

Good to here that it might be useful. It had clean fluid when I removed it but no guarantees for this model given the bad reputation they get. I've decided to draw the line at 1998, and even then focus on early cars. My practical Toyota work van is so good for day to day when compared to the last 20 years of Volvo, and the time investment from running one.

$200 as a rebuild core, mostly for the time it took to remove, seems fair? It may or may not run as is with solenoids and clean fluid?

I'd offer to help with replacement, but I a committed to a 70s vw camper project for the next couple of months, and unfortunately it looks like a little bit of panel work will keep me busier than expected.

Hi all - ended up selling the Volvo, it was collected today. Unfortunately a bridge too far for me with house renovations in progress, I didn't have the time or energy to sort it out. I started it for the first time in months this morning, it fired up immediately and idled perfectly, will be a great wagon for the new owner once he rebuilds the trans. Thanks for all the advice, that brings my 5 year Volvo ownership to an end.

Sad to see it go but that's how it is , I have just done two rebuilds in the last two weeks for customers.
