The spin around the block yesterday was a bit of a hoot. The difference between a tired old B21E with an autotragic BW55 and a B230F with K cam and M46 is stark. It is no longer 0-60 in 10 minutes, it is now below 5. At a guess I reckon I've gained another 30kW without too much exaggeration over the B21. The M46 is smooth, clutch is good, brakes are crap and steering needs final alignment, but other than that, the annoying clunk in the RHF suspension has disappeared and the world is a happier place.
One annoying thing is that I've found that the car is running quite hot on the gauge and I'm yet to resolve the issue completely. I swapped in another 87 deg thermostat that has some small bypass holes drilled and it is definitely better. The gauge does keep rising when you don't have a lot of airflow through the radiator. I think the combination of a warmer cam, good spark and relatively hot plugs won't be helping. I'll change in a set of colder plugs and see how that goes. Failing that I'll change in a new radiator. I don't think that the radiator is the issue because It was fine in another vehicle recently, but I'm not ruling that out entirely. If it runs ok at high speed I might take it to work and borrow the IR camera to check for blockages.
On the to-do list now is: A/C compressor swap to rotary, alignment of the PS pump, resolution of the IACV issue, replace the rear springs (sagged), rear sway bar and rear shock absorbers, replace the rear muffler, shoe the mags and put them on, treat the small beauty spots (aka rust), install the wireless central locking actuator, replace the tailgate hinges, new tailgate rubber seal, upgrade the back seat with headrests and better brakes. Eric should be a much nicer car to drive once that is all completed.
