Looking forward to seeing this project progress, and hope I can convince you to take some spare parts or a car (or three) out of my driveway! :)

It has been a bit of time since last update, bogged down with work, kids at home school and lockdowns. I have had the alternator checked (it works) and advice on wiring. This has been installed along with the radiator. While filling found a leak, still to investigate but looks to be the water pump gasket.

Hooked up a battery for a general test. Only half the lights are working with some not wired or broken bulbs. I did find some incorrect wiring at the rear which got both indicators working. Next to look at is the fuel pump. The relay in the engine bay clicks when the ignition is on but there is no sound from the pump.

Found a paint shop that can supply the gold/copper colour, one other was not able to. I got a small sample to test, they supplied three different versions. It looks to the base version that I am after.

Collected one of the 164s that @carnut222 has in Daylesford, for the gearbox, ended up with a second spare engine. Started pulling some peripheral parts off to detail. I have had the exhaust manifolds treated with a ceramic coating, they have come up well (will add a photo soon).

Hope soon to get some time back in the shed to get some work done.

With the car that I collected from Greg’s there was more rust and holes than solid metal in it. As I cleaned out what was in and on the car more rust was found. With the front section cut off it was not worth keeping for restoring.

The engine/gearbox has been removed along with the early dash assembly. I plan to hold on to this for a future project.

Given the condition of the shell, it was either scrap it or have a play before scrapping. The first step was to see how it would look as a 2-door hardtop. Weld in the back door and some rough cuts and results are shown below. A brace has been added across the two B pillars.

This is more a trial to see how it could look rather than any final endeavor. Will need to consider glass sealing and how the glass sections would lower. Next step would be to see how it would look with about 2” chopped from the roof height.

Wow, looks cool! Even if you don’t make a real one, you could make some yard art out of it! :)

Join two doors together for proper coupe look, make em suicide doors!

Over the weekend I was able to finish a rough roof chop on the 164 that was changed to a 2 door hard-top style. I aimed to take out a bit over 2 inch in vertical height. The difference in height can be seen with the original roof line.

Now that this is done and I have picked up a lot of ideas to make it easier next time, I will remove some final parts from the shell and clear it from the shed.

Grab as many of the little muguard and other clips/grommets/ bolts as you can. Thank me later.

Received today one of the front guard badges, with the TE included.

One more of these and the wiper arms for the head light wipers and I should have all the parts for the conversion to a TE.

Made some room in the shed by getting rid of rusted out body that had been chopped and modified. Nothing was left on it worth recovering and it is off to scrap.

Once this was out and moved the 164 into a better location, I looked into why the water pump was leaking. Easy solution, no gasket. Will order in a full seal kit and be able to clean up the pump.

Next up: looking at issue with fuel delivery, relay kicks over when ignition on but no action from the pump.

Nice - I’m expecting a scrap guy from Trentham to come and pick up the remaining 164s and 240s here soon - who picked up your scrap?

I had a local guy in Elphinstone come around, took it away for no cost. Was happy for it be just be removed.

There is also a wreckers in Harcourt that will come and collect scrap cars and I think they cover a large area.

Yeah...I would be happy with no $$ for the scrap but this guy in Trentham said $100/tonne so yay, better than nothing. We’ll see!

I was wondering if anyone would be able to advise the type of paint finish that was applied to the air filter housing on the 164s. Mine is looking a bit ordinary and would like to freshen up. Any advice will be much appreciated.

I had mine powder coated blue but the original colour is a silver grey. That damage is probably from a battery exploding from being overcharged. Note the damage to the engine bay paintwork too.

Thanks for the response @OldnDecrepit, the blue powder coating certainlty makes it stand out. I am looking for a more original finish so will look for a silver grey color.

Taking teh lid off shows a cleaner underside, when next home will call into a local paint supplier. Was there last week to get prices and they can have a look and supply a match in a spray pack.

Something must have gone wrong with a battery in teh past, before I purchased the car. The battery tray was removed and a replacment from another car was included, need to be welded in. I would like to first get the car running then remove and repaint the engine bay, along with teh rst of the car.

I've been working on mine too. There was 40+ years of grime in the bay when I got her. Happy to provide advice if you need it.

In relation to the paint for the air cleaner I have gone with a spray pack used for brake calipers in cast aluminium, might also use this for the rocker cover.

Planning to take four weeks off later this year to work on the cars and will give the air cleaner housing a rub down and paint, will update on the outcome. Need to work out what I want to achieve in the time off for each car and what will be required in parts and supplies.

Chiming in late here but IIRC some of the old American cars had sort of a silvery-grey hammer-tone finish. Just a comment/option to consider. Hammertone might hight some defects. :)

Hi @carnut222, that was a type of finish that was in the back of my mind. Will see how the brake caliper paint looks once it has been applied.

Have been getting some paint supplies together for this, the Amazon and also an MG I have been working on. Later in the year will be some focus on these three cars but at the moment most of the time has been towards cleaning the interior of the Aston before the engine is ready to go back in.
