  • DCW's 264 anniversary

My business partner and I bought this yesterday, an anniversary 264. These were built in 1977 to celebrate 50 years of Volvo, they were only available in this configuration of silver with blue velour.

The anniversary edition was available as a 244 in 1977 as well, which they built 500 of, the 264 anniversary production numbers aren't known unfortunately. The anniversary 244 never came to Australia, the 264 did but improt numbers are unknown.

The anniversary 264 spec includes: silver metallic paint with side strips, alloy wheels, golde sunroof, brass 1927-1977 anniversary badges, pioneer power antenna and locking fuel cap.

The interior has blue velour, rubber floor mats, full power windows, pioneer 4 channel radio with cassette player, rear headrests, brass badge on the steering wheel and silver plate on glove box.

My cousin had one of these new in Sydney but I've never worked out where it ended up.

This one came up for sale in Mortlake and we thought it was worth getting. We bought it from the granddaughter of the original, it was clear her grandfather had taken very good care of it.

The condition of the interior is amazing, it's very hard to get the velour to photograph well but it looks very good in person. The dash is uncracked and it has the original pioneer/Volvo radio.

The body needs some work but nothing major. It will need a good polish, the badges restoring, some marks touched up and there's some tiny bits of rust under the LH tail light. The wheels will get restored with new tyres.

Plans are to keep it as original as possible, put it on club rego and just use it for special occasions/weekends.

The drive home went well, it has some vibration from the front brakes, and the alternator isn't great. It ran and drove very well on the two hour drive home.

Thanks to @irishbastard for driving me down there to pick it up.

    Brilliant!

Did you have a Motlake pie while there?

      What a great survivor! Score

Nice! Hope you still have from for a 164 or three!

Great looking 264! Glad to hear you're planning to keep it original.

Unfortunately didn’t have time for that, I’ll need an excuse for a drive once its registered though.

Yep I do, only just though.

I went to change the oil today and realised it was last done in 2004!

I decided it would probably be a good idea to take the sump off, and I’m glad I did. it had a decent layer of sludge in it, lots of cleaning, wire wheeling and painting later it turned out well.

I also bought a sump plug on it with a hex to replace the square drive one.

Looking good. That was a fair bit of sludge! Nice how easy it is to get at the sump on the PRV!

Thanks, I'm glad I decided to clean it all up. You have to undo the sway bar brackets on the chassis rails and drop the sway bar down a bit, after that the sump comes off easily.

I put it all back together, I decided to remove the pick up and sheld, I didn't take any before photos unfortunately but they had a fair bit of stuff caked onto them.

I filled it up with full synthetic 10W40 and a genuine filter, it runs heaps smoother now.

Next will be to go over the top end and adjust the valve clearances, replace the rocker cover gaskets and clean everything up.

Nice! Love those funky square washers. Must be a French thing! :) Interesting looking at the drain plug from the inside...looks like it would leave 10 mm of old oil in the pan due to the height of the drain hole. Hmmm...maybe that's why sludge accumulates in the pan.

            What a score.....jealous!

Do the oil every 5k on these... oiling issues are what killed most of them.

              Fantastic looking 264!

Glad it is being kept original, I don't think I've seen one of these on the road.

There are all sorts of strange design features on these, most bolts on the engine are 11mm. I think that drain point location definitely contributes to the build up, the 760 sump has it on the lower panel at the very bottom, but as I discovered with my 264 manual if you fit a 760 sump the sway bar gets in the way of the drain plug.

Thanks, I plan to, the synthetic oil seems to help quite a bit.

Thanks, so far I've only found two more, one in Adelaide and one in Queensland. There were a pair of wreckers in the backyard of a house in Canberra a long time ago.

Thanks, I haven't had an opportunity to do anything else to it yet, it has just been sitting in the back of the warehouse under a cover.

Do you have the YouTube channel with the early 264?
