Hi all,

Just back from the shopping and the radiator fan didn't stop. It's been running now for abart 7 minutes.

It's 28deg outside and I've only gently driven about 4kms. The temp indicator is OK (in the middle).

I have removed the fuse, otherwise I'd have to leave the key in the car turned on - an unreal proposition.

Any clues? (I only drive the car once every three weeks now since the debacle with the $3000 oil leak repair).

(2002 S40 automatic).

Thanks.

  • Check the coolant temp sensor (follow the top radiator hose to the thermostat housing and there is a 2 pin brass sensor).

If it shows any signs of green corrosion it's probably failed.

Otherwise it could be your fan control module on the radiator fan assembly.

One hour later and fan still runs if I replace the fuse.

All fluids are fine.

Thanks Timbo,

It's a turbo model so the sensor is run off the Engine Temp Sensor. It all looks fine & dandy and brassy.

Will now look for the Fan control module (brains) on the radiator. I reckon it's this as the fans actions are just bonkers.

Also, I have barely driven the car in a few months as it has twice konked out on me for no reason. Just 'died' but started immediately upon striking a neutral and firing it up. A very dangerous position to be in. Hence my leaning towards a module problem.

All,

Replaced the radiator fuse this morning and it was quiet. Took car for a 5kms drive and EM light came on!

I've done this test three times now and same result. I'm thinking by disturbing the Temperature sensors I've made the necessary contact. It's 31 deg now and fan came on when at an intersection like it's supposed to do. Otherwise O.K.

I'd like to 'park' this thread for a while now & try to use the car more regularly (though riding my bike I get 64 m.p.g.).

Or sell it.

Cheers all and thanks Timbo.

We had the same problem with a NA S40. The ECT sensor had failed, but looked fine physically. ECU defaults to full fan when there's a difference between the 2 coolant temperature readings.

Thanks Staggers,

I went to my sweethearts on Wednesday (70kms round trip) and the car is back to being great again. No warning lights and no fan whirring in-necessarily. Some winding roads and some 118-ish k.p.h. Motorway (used to be called Freeways) and it was a delight to drive. This's the best car I've ever had. Home now and happy.

I forgot to mention that in the DSA (19) light was also on when item '21' was alight but it too went away.

I'm figgereing it's just the contacts losing it due to lack of use and living in a Coastal region. I'll try and drive it at least once a week. (My motorbike is my main form of transport).

Cheers,

Max.
