940 Alternators

940 dies again! Alternator just won't keep up. It was reconditioned a couple of years ago now. Not sure of its rating. Could be original 80 amp????

I think I need an updated unit. Can I get something in 100 plus amps? Voltage drops below 12.5vlt when headlights(90/100watts) are turned on, without radio or wipers etc.

It maybe a bad earth or the regulator? Just not sure. I'll send it for a bench test tomorrow.

But if I could get a better alternator I would do.

Yes there is an upgrade... but I don't what it is! I think it might be a VW alternator or a Bosch one... @Dauntless do you know?

Take your current one to an auto elec and get it rewound for more amps.

Don't the later ones (or maybe just the 960s) have a 100amp unit. I've seen them for sale on ebay.

Thats what I was thinking. I'm sure I read something about 140Amp ones too, somewhere or other. I'll look at my 960 one in the morning!

940's only ever sold with 100amp units
91 = Bosh unit
91+ = Denso unit

960's got a 120amp Denso unit
You can swap pullys and use it on the 940 easily

on the Bosch unit, the ONLY thing that ever fails is the Voltage Regulator

Even some of the 200 series style and early 700 are 100A, I filtered through the 7 I have here, found a 100. So they are around. Just need to hunt.
Or as mentioned, get it rewound for more amps.

I have a 100amp 940 one that works quite well. Factory 740t is 100a as well.

Its going in on Friday for all the bushes I cant do myself, springs, shocks etc. Will have the Alt tested, along with some other gremlins. Ill no if its throw away then!
BTW it is a 100amp "Volvo" unit. Pretty sure its a Bosch.

I'm only seeing the one part number of 5003919 for the Volvo OE unit which is a Bosch made Denso style unit that puts out 120 amps

Maybe they did stupid things for the aus market...

The FCP Groton (USA) site shows a 100amp bosch one for my model.
