Volvo 240 Removing the front bumper skin

Hi, can the front bumper skin be removed without removing the whole bumper. If so how. How many screws? Is it easy or hard.

Its been a while, but I think:
The answer is to remove the whole bumper and then remove the skin. The sharp little clips that hold the plastic skin to the alloy support do not lend themselves to release without full access.
Bumper removal is a simple process if you undo the bolts in the chassis rails and slide it forward.

Thanks. I managed to get it off fairly easily. Is there any point in keeping the steel bit or should I just their it out.

The steel bit is what stops the front of the car getting mashed if you hit something.....

As carnut says, its the main structural part of the bumper.

I'm only guessing but I'd say he is asking if it is worth keeping (for spares) as opposed to if it is worth refitting to the car..

Ok I need to clarify. Thats what happens when one types on the phone. Gibberish comes out :) . My existing bumper had a damaged corner that had been repaired badly. I took the bumper off along with the steel beam. The replacement bumper came as an assembly with the plastic and the steel beam. Now my question is whether it is worth keeping the beam. Can one buy just the plastic.

You should just put the better bumper on as a whole and turf the bad one. If you ever need a better one you should easily be able to find a complete used one. The chance of just getting the plastic part are low.

As others have said, best to just replace the whole thing, the inner part only very rarely gets damaged, and if it does the plastic will usually also be destroyed.

If you're building a race car then save weight by making some little mounts to support the plastic skin and do away with the whole metal section, it won't save the car if you run into anything though.
