  • V70 1998 throttle/accelerator cable

Hi all,

I hope this is the correct place to post this.

I have a pretty stiff accelerator on my 1998 V70. From my reading it seems likely that it will need to be replaced soon, before it breaks.

Can anyone point me to a good local (Australian) supplier of a new cable?

Matt

Dealer, there are no new manual cables left worldwide, probably the same for autos but you might find one, don't be tempted by USA /Euro ones they are lhd which won't fit

Motion pro cable lube plastic thingy and the spray every 6 months keeps mine usable.

I wish they made new ones tho.

Oh dear. I’ll check the dealer but it looks like I’ll be making my own. I suppose if the sleeve is ok the core would be an easy replacement.

I will check out the motion pro lube. Thanks for the tip.

Been the hunt for a couple of years now for my 850 , Nada ☹

Ok, thanks guys. DIY it will be then.

A quick follow up for anyone searching on the same issue.

I was happy to find that the cable was perfectly ok, just needed a bit of a lube. I disconnected it from the throttle body end, held it straight forward and up from the firewall and shot some PTFE based lube down the cable sleeve while my helper pumped the accelerator pedal. This seemed to work the lube in nicely.

I have not yet tested it while driving, but it feels immeasurably better in the driveway.

One strange thing, at least to me, is that the cruise control appears to drive the accelerator pedal itself, rather than going directly to the throttle body like most that I have met before. Therefore I am hopeful that the cruise control will behave a bit better, it has been very poor at holding a constant speed for a while.

The cruise control is a vacuum system not a can bus system as found on newer car's, the actual pump(or whatever its called) is underneath the battery tray. It maybe getting weak with age and its poor location

Yes, that’s the sort I am used to, but I am also used to them driving the throttle body directly, not the accelerator pedal. That’s just plain odd.

I am happy to report I took the car for a test drive and it is terrific. The lighter pedal is a huge improvement and the cruise control is working very well.
