  • 740 Sedan Anti-sway bars

Looking for thicker sway bars for my 740 sedan for the front and rear.

I'd like something like the IPD sway bars, but the shipping prices alone scare me away.

If anyone has any locally that are same spec as the IPD, or there is an Australian distributor please let me know.

You could consider the ones from a 940/960, much cheaper.

Stock bars on a 740 are 19mm & 16mm. Front from a 960 is 23mm and the rear from a 940 is 19mm.

I have them installed on my 1990 740GLE.

Does it make much of a difference?

Yes, but I have done other changes too - stock king springs on the front and Monroe shocks.

I'm on the Gold Coast too, so come over for a drive.

      Sounds good!

I'm putting on Bilstein B4 shocks front and rear and hopefully thicker sway bars to improve the handling by a bit.

Where abouts are you on the GC?

I've got about three sets of roll bars from 940 estates but I'm in the UK.

The 940 and 960 bars front and rear do vary.

From the Pocket Data Manual - first, see the product plate and chassis code.

      Then find the numbers.

Then go into the parts catalogs and they mark the bar diameter in the notes column. Well, sometimes they do.

The trouble with those lists are that a lot of those variations never came to OZ.

You really have to find one and measure it.

I'm fairly certain the front bar from my old 89/90 760gle was 23mm or 24mm. It was an IRS car & had no rear bar.

I took a measurement of my sway bars today, and strangely enough the front sway bar was also 23mm or 24mm yet the rear was only 16mm.

I'm assuming the front sway bars fitted were originally from a 760 or from a 900 series car, yet i find it strange that the rear sway bars were kept stock.

I may have a spare rear one - I'll check and let you know.

I only have the spare sway bars from my 740.

Happy to donate them to someone. The wagons dont have rear bars, so any bar will be an improvement.

        Some do, some don't
