It's a 2011 Th!nk city. It only had 3500 miles on it when I bought it. So... In my simple mind it was brand new. I paid about $3750 for the car and to have it shipped to me. Since then I've put about another $2500 into fixing issues and problems. Now I'm going to have to rebuild the pcu just to make it drive again. The car would've been worth about $7000usd if I had just flipped it instantly rather than had the audacity to want to drive it.

I figure I'm going to have to drop about $10k more in it to gut it and rebuild it with modern drive electronics and to eliminate all of these shitty issues.

What are you thinking of in the way of battery and battery voltage?

Also how much weight do you want to consume with battery?

Going 100% aftermarket with the motor controller might be a better option than sticking with stock and cheaper as well

I'm looking into two different options right now:

1:. 120v HyPer9 AC motor, 24kwh of LG battery modules (already own). Batteries put out 800+Amps and would be good for 120hp and 175tq.

2: buying the entire drive unit from the Vanderhall Edison 2. It uses 2 Zero 75-10 motors, and 2 (14.4kwh) battery packs. It makes 140hp and 250tq.

The last resort is to yank everything and throw in a used K24 and automatic trans. Drop 360lbs of battery weight in the process.

What sorta range do you want or need out of it?

think about doing a 370v+ system so can drop the amps but still get stupid power out of it

So 100 Samsung sdi cells, 3.7v nominal, 62ah

Rated for 1.5c continuous, 5c For 60 seconds and 10c for 10 seconds

620amps at 370+ volts is 229kw or >300hp

Battery pack weight of 180kg

Also gives you 23kwh of capacity

I've been playing around with this a lot lately while thinking about electrifying the manual Saab 9-3 I have sitting in the front yard

Would have to have an independent rear suspension for it to work. I almost bought a cool 70s model Volvo 242 to do a Tesla swap into but the fabrication shop I was talking with pointed out that designing and building the suspension for the rear would cost s much as the whole rest of the build.

My little th!nk has a torsion beam rear end. All based on the citreon saxo and Peugeot 106

I wonder what sorta 1/4mile times a 530kw 2.5ton xc90d5 hybrid could do.....

I'm limited in voltage requirements based on what the motor and controller will accept.

This is just a play car for me to run little errands around town and previously used to take my kid to school. I maybe put 20 miles a day on it. I was guessing I could keep my current 100 mille range if the capacity of the battery is still the same. Performance will only affect range if I'm beating on it.

It's a slippery slope brother.... Going the ev conversion route. Every car I see for sale looks like a promising build and I know you're worse than me about impulse buying vehicles!

Why not just run it FWD, its going to be traction limited no matter what but unless there is video.... when you go into court...

I think the car is too narrow for it to fit. I would love to build a ridiculous sleeper. I was thinking about buying another smart car and modifying it except the battery compartment isn't very big. Only 17kwh, as-is at low output. I would probably have to remove the passenger seat and just put the batteries there instead.

Volvo has a real problem on it's hands. It looks like the new XC40 Recharge is going to cost the same as or slightly more than the Polestar 2.

We called Volvo to get an update on our pre-order. To see if they had pricing info yet and was told "$55k after tax credit". So now the wife wants me to cancel the Volvo and buy a local Jaguar I-Pace instead. The jaguar looks better and has the same power and range. Also, there's a chance I'll be able to knock the $80k msrp down to the same $55k as the Volvo. The dealer has already heavily discounted it and I am member of a "buyers club" that gets a 10% discount on new Jag purchases (also Audi, Land Rover and a flat $11k on BMW). So if I'm able to use all of the discounts I'll be able to buy this $80k Jaguar for $49k. Hard to beat.

Just wish the charging wasn't so shit. 7kw AC on-board and 75kw DC?? Manufacturers now are using 20kw AC and 350kw DC.

Just don't really see the benefit other than the Volvo having faster charging speeds. Fingers crossed they don't try to wreck me on my trades. Hoping to knock another $5-7k off that price (pre-tax).

The jag looks smaller than the XC40, less trendy among hipsters for sure :-P

I joined a "members club" for $99 that is basically a bulk buyers group. They negotiated a deal with jaguar, land Rover, BMW, Audi, etc... The BMW deal is $11k off the price of a new i3. I almost took that deal for myself. The jaguar deal is 10% of the MSRP off your best negotiated deal. I found a dealer that has a 2019 corporate demo with a few miles on it (still considered new) and they took $20k off MSRP.... Plus my $7655 off that price and then the $7500 federal credit... It's just too good to pass up.

I could probably buy this car, take the tax credit and sell it immediately and make a profit... But the wife has always wanted a jaguar.
