I'm looking for an 16v b234f engine

she is my best partner and my home... I really want to fix it

Thank you all

ramrod

What's wrong with your one?

A few days ago I was checking the level of engine oil, it was completely ran down, it never happened before. Then I checked coolant water tank, has oil in to it... I went to mechanic today, they confirmed the oil is from engine.

They told me that there's no worth to open an engine to find out the problems (cost maybe $2000-3000), the better way is find another engine or just buy another car. But I very love my car, she is my first car, we've been traveling together over a year now, lots of memories... I am a traveler have no much money but still keen on try to fix it up. ?

ramrod

Where in Tasmania are you from?

I'm at around Hobart at the moment, but I can go anywhere in Tasmania recently if has any possibility to fix it...

The mechanics standard line is: It's not worth it, it will cost too much too fix.

I say it's about who you know

If you're lucky, you have only blown the cylinder head gasket, not the rest of the engine

Oh... that's so true, I've been 3 different mechanics and they all said the same thing.

I don't know car much so I can just listen the suggestions that mechanics gave me, but it just been really struggling, I don't want having another car!!!

The person who you tag is a mechanic as well?

Who, me? Nah, I'm just a Volvo fanatic in Tassie, who knows @ramrod from my days on the mainland.

From your description, it appears to have blown a head gasket. How many kays are on the car?

If done properly, the head will need to be removed, and placed in an oven under clamps to ensure it's straight.

It would be sensible to replace the cam timing belt at the time the head is removed. The balance shaft belt would be best removed and not replaced while that's being done.

Shop around for the best price - the good guys will also tell you about changing the timing belt.

Complete, good, original B234 engines are getting hard to find now. Your alternatives to replacing the HG in the car are -

swapping over to a B230F 4 cyl single OHC engine. Won't go as hard as the B234F, and will likely cost as much as a HG replacement once all the computers, etc, are changedengine swap to V8 LS1 (yawn) or similar. Not cheaper or hassle free as a HG replacement, but may go harder. part out the car. The head alone should fetch $500 (I hope you don't scrap the car and part it though)sell the car

I hope you decide to bite the bullet and repair the car properly. If the wagon is still in basically good shape, and you like it, IMO it's hard to find anything better than a 700 or 900 wagon for the price of a head gasket repair.

I bought a wagon with a blown HG, which was then fixed properly, and it's gone to NSW and back to Launceston many times since, even towing a trailer full of parts.

Head gaskets are easy to do. You might find that you have a couple of hydraulic tappets on the way out if you've done a bazillion km.

      So the list to contemplate:

Top overhaul set: Skandix have the overhaul gasket set

Whatever hydraulic lifters have failed (i.e. they don't compress in your fingers): Skandix have the hydraulic tappets.

Timing belt change: Skandix have new timing belts.

Check the oil pump: The oil pump bolt grade needs to be 10.8 and get the part number on the oil pump gear to check that it has been upgraded.

Do the head in oven thing as above and get it checked for being straight (if not, get it skimmed). Get the valves lapped. Put it all back together, time it all up and enjoy. What year is it?

How did they confirm it's engine oil? Pull out the transmission dipstick and see if the oil is pink as it's much more likely the trans cooler has failed. The engine may be using oil but oil is cheap and can be topped up easily.

        Regards,

        Michael

I may be wrong, but it seems to me that if the transmission cooler had failed, the OP would have encountered massive slip from the AW72 on his trips getting repair quotes, if it lived that long. The symptoms described fit what happened just before the B234F in The Noodle finally did its HG big time.

Ahaha thank you for these informations! Those options seems kind of difficult for me... I've never fix a car by myself as I have not much knowledges and experiences for vehicles, so prefer to find someone who be able to repairs for me, but also would love to learn and try tho.

A thing is I am traveling at the moment, so I don't have repaire tools and place be able to do it, if you don't mind, do you willing to meet up and have a look for my car? If you would like to teach me and repair in this case that would be very helpful. Definitely would love to pay for it!

Another thing is, a pipe of coolant system had breakage a years ago, it made my engine has been high temperature at that time, so I think maybe this issue is because of that.

This is the oil that I took off from water tank today... it looks really... bad.

Thank you so much! I think it's really complicated until I actually learn how to do it and do it by myself...

          Especially in English hahaha...

@euphiefernn I will give @deleted_user_1622 a phone call tomorrow and see if he can recommend somebody he knows is good in your area to have a look at it for you. I am really tied up for the next few weeks.

That coolant looks awful. Avoid driving the car if you can.
