Up for sale is my complete M47 conversion kit for a 164. Will bolt straight into any 164 with no modifications. Actuator hydraulics are from a 240.

An M46 will also bolt straight on, though a shortened Drive Shaft will be required.

It will suit 6 bolt and 8 bolt crankshafts.

Includes:

Custom made Bell Housing.

M47 gearbox, completely refurbished 10 years ago with all new bearings throughout. Changes nicely, but has a slight whine in 5th. My wife says" what whine"? So it can't be too bad.

164 flywheel with 6 and 8 bolt capability.

164 pressure plate

Sachs 240 turbo clutch plate (10mm larger in dia than std.)

Correct length drive-shaft. Probably could use new uni joints. No play in spline.

The design is for the adaptation of gearbox and clutch + slave cyl from a 240, and it works very well. The reason for sale is that I have converted the car back to auto, but made a special adaptor plate to allow fitment of an AW71. Getting older I suppose.

So if you you have a 164 auto with the 3 speed slush box, you can use this conversion kit to make it a 5 speed and transform the car, and see much better fuel economy. I managed to get 1ltr/9.2kms once on LPG. Even with the AW71 the economy has plummeted. The beauty of the 164 is that conversion to manual is very easy. The fixture for the clutch pedal is there even in the auto's. You just need to modify a 240 clutch pedal and it will bolt straight in. Then use a 240 or 740 clutch master cyl, easy to get. You will have to cut a hole in the firewall but thats easy too.

The box is in good condition. Like I said all bearings have been replaced about 10 years ago and it has never been pushed. The synchro rings were replaced where they were worn and the changer teeth were sharpened, a very tedious job. My experience is that that does more for smooth changes than replacing synchro rings. As I said there is a whine in 5th that comes in around 90 and tapers off past 100. Its not a bad whine though, my wife doesn't even hear it.

5th is actually 0.82. It works well in front of the 3.54 diff on most 164's. I put high profile tyres on the car which brought the revs to 2500 @ 110kph. Its able to climb any hill on freeways in 5th with that set-up.

Originally the M47 box was used on 240's with a 3.31 diff ratio. Thats why 1st is so short, but the problem was that you had to basically change back to 1st to negotiate suburban type intersection corners and you would have to change back to 4th at any sort of hill on a freeway. Really annoying, not a great set-up.

Thanks for that info. I currently have an m410 setup and 3.54 diff. The ratio in first is a bit too long in first.

Not interested in a swap. The reason I built this set-up was because I wanted to use an M46 or M47 with 240 type actuation. Also parts are readily available.

As I said, I now have an Aw71L installed and if I wanted a manual again I would stay with the M47. If you currently have a M410 stick with it, though I have heard they are a pretty noisy box with lubrication problems. If you find 1st too tall then put low profile tyres on the wheels, that will shorten it.
