Pile of SSD's + Spinning Rust Drives

i have a 750GB HDD out of my laptop. hitachi something. unused because I SSD'd it. do you have a use for it?

Yeah. This weekend is a little rough for me (which is why I needed some heads up). I'm actually going to be out and about every day and spending the night in the lab to get caught up on work.

I may have some time Saturday morning but not much. I have to help a work mate move in the city. I also need to clean off the laptop to determine which movies I want to keep. 256gb won't be enough to hold everything but the important (to me) stuff

also...you think adding one of these to my mac mini will give it some new life? I haven't even turned the thing in probably 4 months

Take the DVD drive out of the mini , use a sled to screw an ssd in there and it will go gangbusters! My 2006 iMac 2.4g with ssd is faster than my 2010 iMac 3.06g .....Same with laptop,dump DVD drive for ssd drive and run os on it and all programs , use HDD for store.

My Mac is only a 1.83gh dual core. It bogs down trying to run fill screen video on my 40" monitor.

3/4 is Max on the old core duo macs , can you ram disc these , if that's a word? My core duo iMac with ssd can certainly run dual screens OK but 40" ?? Its a 125g gpu if same as iMac...

Same here, my 2.4G C2D MBP with OWC SSD was faster than a 3.0 i5 at work. You could also tell when the iMac ran out of RAM, it just shat itself.

The standard drive will be a 5400 which will definitely hold you back, SSD will improve things but not sure how it's gonna cope with 40". I assume you're outputting HD via DVI? All the ram disk stuff is done by the system, you'd have to go into unix to change that. You could upgrade the CPU as well but not sure the gains you'd get with the video.

@Ben I have a 2009 iMac sitting here that the GPU is crapped out , its a STD problem but being 20" model I don't think its replaceable like 24" iMac with same problem I have been wondering about taking it out or at least cutting connection and running a pcie ATI 2400 card like the older and newer imacs ran via wires somehow , I have a card. How would the system cope would playing with Unix be involved here or is this just to much shit to be bothered with?

Yeah bummer Les. I had a 20" and they just weren't that good all round. The display on mine had a weird colour tinge that I just couldn't shake.

An outside-of-the-case card is pretty cool - I recon you'd just need to get a card that has mac drivers, either factory or available third party. You wouldn't need to do anything else from what I can gather.

ifixit and owc might be good tech resources for you =)

It would still be worth trying an ssd in it Matty , or just go and build a hackintosh with the ssd instead ?

that would be a better option. I need to pull my pics and files off the mac first as we have a lot of pics we can't replace on there.

it only has an 80gb hdd now. If I put windows 7 or vista on it with the 240gb SSD I could probably use it as my media server for my netflix/hulu streaming and holding all of my vudu/flixster movies.

If it's a 1.83 C2D then it's a macmini 2,1 which can see 3Gb. You can either chuck in a 2 + 1 or 2 + 2 and waste a gig. 3Gb was great running Snow Leopard Server, it's running 10.7 Lion desktop now fairly well.

Have you looked at Plex? That's a pretty popular package for home theatre mini setups.

I was told it maxed out at 2gbs by the apple store when I bought it... A 2gb stick would be peanuts now so worth trying.
