Ex850R;21810 wroteTake the DVD drive out of the mini , use a sled to screw an ssd in there and it will go gangbusters! My 2006 iMac 2.4g with ssd is faster than my 2010 iMac 3.06g .....Same with laptop,dump DVD drive for ssd drive and run os on it and all programs , use HDD for store.
Same here, my 2.4G C2D MBP with OWC SSD was faster than a 3.0 i5 at work. You could also tell when the iMac ran out of RAM, it just shat itself.

The standard drive will be a 5400 which will definitely hold you back, SSD will improve things but not sure how it's gonna cope with 40". I assume you're outputting HD via DVI? All the ram disk stuff is done by the system, you'd have to go into unix to change that. You could upgrade the CPU as well but not sure the gains you'd get with the video.
