There should be one on your car.
I've been looking at the options for my 1974 164E as they were not in use back then. You can get stick on sheeting that you cut to size but I'd rather get the proper material.
Only the last GLE's had them
You can custom make something from dynamat material and I would assume that would be cheaper than trying to acquire a genuine OEM sound deadener
Thanks for the info. I am going to chase the rockinhorse shit!!
The manufacturers must be buying the product from somewhere these days as all cars have this. Even if it can't shaped perfectly, it would still be possible to make some sort of blanket and use clips to attach it.
I don't want to use dynamat or the stick on foam material as I expect to have to paint the bonnet at some time in the future.
It's not a GLE thing, my 92 240 had it and definitely not a GLE.
The engine is still loud even with that deadening though, you might be better off spending the money/time adding dynamat to the floor/doors etc.
The '75 242DL's had it, but most other models didn't. Sounds like they brought it back in the '90's models.
Adding it will make a minimal difference at best, maybe put the money towards a louder stereo system.
Thanks for the replies everyone. As far as noise goes my complaint is more air rush noise around drivers side window shield.
I am more wanting to "complete" the engine bay rather than sound proof it. In my opinion it looks like it should be there and detracts from the finish.
I am going to chase an OEM part if anyone hears of or comes across one.
Thanks.
Please let me know if you find a source.

Adding under bonnet sound deadening will make a difference, select the right material about 2-3db down with no other modification.
Sealing holes in firewall and insulating the bulkhead all the way to the front screen will also yield a similar reduction. Lots of work to do correctly.
Quieter...or louder, it's up to you. Quieter has downside with early cars, increasing the perception of other NVH.
Try Berry Motor Group in Mitcham or Voldat in Moorabbin. Pretty sure most of the 92 & 93 models had it and they have wrecked some late-model 240s. My 91 240GLE did not have it, but I fitted one from a 93. In the US I know at least the 240 Turbo had it in 1984 as my parents’ car had it.
I wonder if turbo models had it to prevent heat from causing early paint failure on the bonnet. I seem to recall some early 260's had it as well.

Quite probably...although some of the other US models may have gotten it as well - I don’t recall. I think the Yanks might have been more particular about noise & vibration than the Aussies of that era LOL!
Quite likely Greg!
I took a (low quality) pic of my completely original 242DL tonight:
What material is that?
Foam bonded to a cardboard like backing. It's held up remarkably well for almost half a century.
Mark @iceton1975 at Berry Motor Group is wrecking a 93 240 wagon and it has a nice bonnet sound deadener. Give him a call. Not sure where you’re located - shipping could be an issue.
Found this on Skandix:

Cheers

Bit worried about the quality of the generic one.
Spoke to a upholstery guy locally about the stick on ones and he said that they all fall down eventually. Definitely don't want this to happen and cause a fire with a poor quality unit.
