That's my brothers car in the photo, they are 740 steel wheels, just painted silver.

I believe the center caps have a 70mm outer edge to edge diameter but am not sure how they stay in place on a steel wheel application.

Someone on here will surely know. Most of Volvo's centre caps grab onto the hub rather than the wheel but I'm not sure if this is the same for this design.

This picture surely can represent a 15 hole steel wheel with a "V" style center cap. I know these caps were made for 240's and I know the 740 wheel I have has a 2.5" center hole.

So I am circling back to this question. I am looking to put Volvo "V"center caps on my steel 15 x 7" / 5x108 wheels which are on a 740. Has anyone done this and if so which center caps will work. Thank You.

Does anyone know for steel wheels if the hub centre diameter is the same for an 80's model 240 compared to the 740? It was mentioned that the center bore is 2.5" for a 740 wheel. Thank You for all who have responded.

The centre bore on the Volvo steel wheels is the same on 240 and 740 wheels as they are hub-centric wheels and they didn’t change the hub centre diameter until later FWD Volvos.

Edit: Note some of the earlier 140 steel wheels were NOT hub-centric and had a larger bore in the wheel. However even the 140 hubs/axles are same diameter as 240s so hub-centric 240 and 740 wheels will fit 140s.

I’m not sure - the early smaller 240 centre caps (about 150 mm diam) had some retaining clips that fit in holes between the lug holes, so they wouldn’t work on the 740 wheel. The later ones that were larger dia and had a separate centre V emblem that clipped onto the wheel hub centre...not sure whether they would work. There may have also been a small V centre cap that just covered the hub - I assume it pushed thru the back of the wheel before installing the wheel, but not sure how that works with hub-centric wheel. I guess you just have to experiment. I’m sure you could custom make something.

The way the larger ones work is, the outer dinner plate has three tabs on it that fit onto a groove on the hubs, and when you press the small centre cap in, it locks everything in place so it doesn't fall out.

Thank You James but I think you are referring to a 240's hubcap, which is a great look to finish off a Volvo' steel wheel, but I am looking to finish off the look of my wheels with just a center bore / center cap. No hubcap.

For my application, a 740 steel wheel I would assume the center cap would be inserted through the backside of the wheel And somehow would either wedge itself in the center bore of the wheel. I've seen "metal tabs" on the center caps and I'm guessing they act as a stopping point so the center cap doesn't push through the bore? I'm guessing.

Here is a resolution to the questions and I quieries I had regarding center caps not necessarily intended for a Volvo 740, but appear to function.
