harpdevice Hello, I changed my old non-OE Alternator and Voltage Regulator to the proper ones. The car started just fine and I took it for a spin - no problems. But after I pulled up in the driveway, I turned the key to off and it did not shut off. I disconnected the coil wire to shut it off. I checked the wiring and everything seems fine. Does any one have any ideas why this is happening? Thanks, Kevin
timbo If you went from an external regulator to an internally regulated alternator then there is probably a back feed of current thats keeping the coil live. You will probs need to fit a diode to fix it. What did you do to bypass the external regulator? Do you have pictures of the alternator and regulator you removed?
harpdevice Here’s the old alternator with what looks like a relay. And pics for the new one and it’s voltage regulator.
timbo Whats the part number of the new alternator as it still looks like it could be an internally regulated model. This is normally only an issue if you convert from an external regulator alternator to an internal regulator so you most likely have a wiring issue, as the points in the external regulator would prevent backfeed. Possibly an existing issue which is why there was a relay to cut the alternator current with the previous setup
harpdevice The new alternator is a Remanufactured Wilson Part Number: 14227. Yes, I am suspicious of some modification done in the past. Yesterday, I looked at the wires coming out of the ignition switch and it appears to be modified. I plan to investigate in the morning.
harpdevice I got it to work!!! After confirming the wire was connected to the warning “amp” light in the instrument panel, I noticed an extra wire that I reconnected like the old alternator - from the alternator to the 9v resistor on the firewall. The manner in which that old alternator was hooked up was totally strange and didn’t work in the original configuration.
TL_V70 That look like a radio suppressor not a diode. Helps to stop the electrical interference with your am/fm wireless (hum you can here through your speakers when stiff is not grounded properly.
TL_V70 Not sure if the photo you posted of alternator wire up is a test mock up or not but if so the red 6mm cable on the battery positive is way to small of cable to run the alternator 6mm automotive cable good for 30amp max and not continuously ifs its 55Amp alt 0B&S cable is required.
harpdevice Thanks for the information. I will check the wire size. It’s a 55amp. What is a 0B&S cable?
TL_V70 I think I was getting confused all should be good Kevin I just couldn't see a main battery cable
TL_V70 O is the size cable B&S refers to battery & starter. I think 0 is 35mm2 from memory its generic battery cable size you see on most cars
