Been doing some work on the white rally Mirage.
First up was to get it running… it started fairly easily after charging the battery, but had a significant fuel leak in the engine bay.
Turned out that the “brand name”, E85 EFI hose I put in less than 12 months ago had not been able to cope with the ethanol-free petrol, and had first gone soft and then set rock hard.
And cracked.
Fixing that was easy enough, but annoying.
I used the opportunity to tidy up the hose paths and additional filter.
Next up was to ditch the butchered coupe front bumper and replace it with the correct type of bumper for the car.
Apart from the obvious improvement to fit and increased ground clearance, it also has the unexpected benefit of clearing the sump guard.
Then I replaced the fuel tank that supplied the dirt that clogged the injectors with a spare. Decided to fit a new fuel pump, considering the tank has to be removed from the car to do so.
I also replaced the CH Lancer front brakes with S40 brakes - the CH calipers have a huge piston that creates a soft pedal. I didn’t really notice this in the khanacross, but it was disconcerting at the rally sprint.
The S40 calipers have pistons that are between the Mirage and CH piston sizes - so the pedal is improved but still softer than original.
Then off to Luff Motors for the rally rego inspection and the AMSAG logbook inspection - it passed both without drama.
Went to pick the car up at the end of the day and it bloody well wouldn’t start. So walked back home and came back with the car trailer and loaded it onto the trailer in the rain…
Then ignored it for a few days while I got over having the poops…
Ended up replacing the fuel pump with the one from the dirty tank.
Also added another set of holes in the seat mounts so I can be a bit further back and lower.
One benefit of The Boy eating like a horse is that he is close to my height now, so the compromise seating position is less and less of a compromise.
So I think it’s ready to go for the Blue Range (Canberra) rallysprint this coming Saturday.
I originally entered with The Boy as my navigator, but The Girl decided that she wanted to navigate, so now The Boy is navigating for Paulie.
