Hi

I have snooped around on the forum before purchase, but thought I should join. Have just bought a T-5R here in Perth, I understand this might be an forum member's previous car.

Straight into the mechanics to get some minor gremlins sorted, then will start work on interior (headlining, front seats, a few other bits and pieces), but otherwise seems like a decent car.

A couple of photos as bought, happy to keep this updated as I go (and any hints on the interior work which I plan to do myself gratefully accepted!)

Cheers

Welcome @Tristan

Looks good. Judging from the plates I’m guessing its @markc88 ‘s first T-5R

A couple of update photos - not much has happened took it in to have a laundry list of minor mechanical gremlins sorted, have also taken the tow bar off.

Next is to get onto the interior - new headliner, new front seat skins, fix the dash / airbag lump, and some other new trim pieces (sunvisor and console globes, door handle holders cracked etc.). New tinting all around, maybe not too dark.

Then will make a start on some minor exterior things. Overall seems in good condition, maybe plastic bumper re-dye, trim piece for boot, left hand daytime running light / indicator has a crack. There is a minor wind whistle coming from the passenger front, I think it could be the window seal, so will trouble shoot that also.

Lovely to drive, will go in for a few more things to get it back to 100%.

NICE! Love the yellow T5Rs. My partner’s brother owned one about 10-15 years ago in Perth. He bought it from a divorce settlement...I think he had it a few years then sold it back to the original owner after he got back on his feet. The only thing I remember negatively about the car was the clutch pedal was like a rock! I understand something in the clutch wears causing the high efforts...so I assume it would have been fixable.

Small update:

- decent wash, wax and detail - paint really is quite good. Might go in for paint correction but pretty good really.

- replaced cracked turn signal (waiting on rear trunk garnish and some other bits)

- redyed bumpers - the back was very faded and splotchy, sides a mixed bag, and the front was dyed black which looked odd. Cleaned down with light sandpaper and IPA, masked off and used Wurth plastic dye in anthracite (3x light coats, - went well on the black as well that surprises me) - let's see how long it lasts, i read good things and it is a proper dye rather than a temporary fix - but looks truer to original than the combo of faded grey and black. Yet to do door handles.

I used Wurth on mine it's great stuff and lasts years literally, just a pain to get off your hands, learnt to wear gloves quickly

Ah yes.. realised that half way in - my nails and fingers are an interesting colour today at work
a month later
While awaiting on a new headliner, remanufactured front seat skins and a few other bits - which I think are stuck in customs - took it in for some more mechanicals. Replaced water pump (did the timing chain while it was in there) ($$$), new radiator ($$$), fixed or replaced other hoses, seals etc. and everything so the motor and drive-train is 100%.

Only thing I need to do now is the ABS controller - apparently different in these 1995 cars and $1,500 from volvo. Sourcing someone to repair the one I have or a reconditioned one. Sick of the ABS/TRACS lights.

Also new truck gas struts as old ones were gone, new trunk trim as previous one cracked, all interior globes replaced etc. Redyed all grey and black plastic bits, protectant on the rest.

Shampooed and cleaned the original floor mats - result on the right...

Applying leatherique system to rear seats (1x coat drying, might need another but coming up very nicely).

I have a good 2nd hand abs module laying around i can send you some pics.
Great stuff.
I'm very envious of a yellow T5R.
Looks great. How is the leatherique coming up? I was thinking of getting it but opted for a local product and giving that a go with quite good results.
If is only 1500 for new abs module I'd go for it.
You are keeping this original and mint so why not.
Sometimes the module repair fails, it adds up in time, paying for the work and the rework....
I've had reputable repair in two different cars by two sources need redoing after a while. At least I did the instal after the first bad fix.

The abs module and traction control setup on the early 850 turbos is completely different to the later models that youre talking about

Going well, put a generous second coat on last night and about to go away for a week so it can sit for a while and soak..

Sure, that would be great!

As you mention, I understand that 1995 model has a separate controller and pump (after 1996 integrated?). Apparently my controller is cactus - they tried to resolder but no good.

My concern with just purchasing a new one as suggested above is that it may also go bad in 10 years? Maybe that's not right, if its set and forget for the rest of the car's lifetime then maybe that's the answer..

Welcome and looks a million bucks already!

With Leatherique rejuvenator oil it works with heat or time.
And works even better with heat AND time
If your after cleaning, one application combo of the rejuvenator and pristine clean and followed by another combo usually cleans things up.

If you’re after softening the leather, then this is where multiple applications with heat AND time really help.
I recently treated my E30 seats to clean and restore softness.
Glad wrap helps slow the oil drying out an concentrates penetration into the leather.
Before and after here...

Keep up the good work.

Oh, and before you throw $$$$ at the ABS module, worth giving Injectronics in Hallam VIC a call. They might be able to help refurbish your unit.
Full disclosure: not affiliated - they are up the road from a wiring supplier and come recommended.

I just had a look at that link - they have come up so well, amazing! That's a good idea, I'll do a few applications / combos. Definitely not hot here at the moment but I've got the time while customs are keeping my new fronts hostage.

Thanks for the tip on Injectronics as well
Injectronics dont repair the early abs modules. They usually only have faults with either the wiring degrading or hydraulic leaks though so you may not need the complete module.
You need someone with the right scan tool to check for codes as most generic scanners struggle to get into the early 850s as they're not quite full obd2
