Hi there, first post on the Oz Forum. Been about on the US and UK forums a bit when I had my 2004 XC90 T6 and the 2007 XC90 D5 but picked this S60R up about 15 months ago after I sold the T6.
My S60R has done about 205,000 km's and goes beautifully. Is in good nick with a few tatty
things here and there but overall it is in good condition for its age. Goes like a train though and is great fun to drive. Rear end is twitchy so I am guessing rear suspension rubbers are worn, front wishbones have been replaced as have electronic shocks which work well.
That said, I drove a 2007 S80 V8 with 94,000Km's on it yesterday and was pretty impressed. Felt bigger and sloppier than the S60 (which it is) but the auto is easier on the dodgy left hip. The 6 speed in the S60R is pretty close ratio so you are changing gears all the time which in traffic is a pain. The S80 is $12k so is about right and if dealt with quickly the auto might be able to be saved by replacing the fluid immediately. It has only been serviced at Volvo so is trans oil is original.
The XC90 D5 did the gearbox (torque converter and valve body gone) at 190,000 km's so am well versed in the $7,500 repair bill but at 98,000 km's then S80 might be OK. The D5's been moved on so a one Volvo household at the moment.
Not sure if I will switch the S60R for the S80 V8 or not as the S60R is a great car but the S80 V8 did sound amazing. I average 9.4l per 100 km's in in the S60R and I am guessing the S80 will be about the same as my old T6 which was around the 14l per 100km mark so fuel costs will be a factor in this.
Anyway, will let you know how it goes.
