Hey all,

My sisters in-laws are selling the above car. It is in very good condition with 144k km. They are thinking of selling it to my sister for $12k. (Price seems high to me).
Considering that it is diesel and my sister travels 10mins to work, and within 10mins of most other things, I've tried talking them out of it.
Is this a bad idea for inner city dwellers, or does the D5 not mind short drives?
What commonly goes wrong with these cars in general?

Should they ditch this idea and get something more modern and petrol?

The price is okay but the short commute isn't. It needs a decent run at 80 kmh plus at least every 2 weeks or it will carbon up. Probably what killed the engine on my V50 D5, the PO didn't put many Ks on it.

And when it does die mechs don't really want to tear it down to fix it, just pull the engines and replace it with a used one. That was my experience anyway.

They really need something petrol or even electric if that works for them

I usually refer people to this article by Subaru Australia. They produced it due to the high number of people who had issues with their boxer diesels who were only using them for short urban trips.

Egr will clog badly within a year or 2 and dpf not long after
It's also over priced by a few k

Gd series i30 would be well within budget and is an amazing appliance without the toyota tax

Not sure about XC90s, but the other consideration with diesels and short commutes is that they are hard on batteries - my diesel (Disco 2) hated life when it did short commutes to the station like that.

Also, if the existing owners used it for commuting then it is bound to be clogged up already.
My wife uses a low K 07 s80d5 for her work, the way she drives it gets a work out and regular freeway work to appointments but I am getting the egr cleaned as a service job in future. It gets a country drive monthly.
EGR delete is possible but ecu piggyback unit needs to be put in to delete it.
The swirl flaps are the next big concern....
