I have the 2004 xc90 2.5T 194,000km on clock decent service history. Gearbox has started clunking every now and then when slowing down or speeding up and as I’m in the country very limited knowledgeable mechanics around. I can get a trans service for it for $219 which is basically old oil flushed and new oil put back in. Does anyone know If there should be anything else done please

More likely engine mounts.
I'll leave the experts to advise on auto fluid replacement. Not flush is the key...
Nelpd96
@Ex850R , I assume that the no flush comments come from the understanding that a complete flush may dislodge stuff vs a gradual change out of fluid which should leave the gunk intact while refreshing the fluid
Ex850R
Two trains of thought.....
The word flush is sticking point really.
Just dumping the fluid and refilling worked on our s80d5.
My v60t6 had gradual pump out running motor and topping up till clean came out.
Vastly different me ages but both ok it seems. Mine just done again via dump method.
Heard of one xc90v8 box capping itself after a gradual clean fill. Plus another model, same result.
Who knows..... Sorry....

No worries snoopy yeah it’s a gamble I might cal a Volvo dealer who has mechanics one may be happy to answer the question but it’s def clunking in certain gears at different times and speeds so don’t wont to end up with the whole thing blowing up big $ then
Ex850R
Dealers don't do it, they say the box is sealed for life.
Where are you?
We can point you to a indie volvo shop.

Port augusta south Australia

Change the fluid.
Sealed for life is a joke, fluid is likely pitch black and full of particular waste from the clutch packs and other components.
Adaptions should be reset and particle count checked. Good fluid used and you might be lucky.

Michael Bennet is in Adelaide who has his business details?

I have a 2006 2.5T with 180,000km. I had a similar issue. Did a drain and fill twice in a space of 2 months. Got adaptation done after the 2nd fill. This seems to have vastly improved my gearbox. Note - drain and fill not flush. Thanks.

Volvo Adelaide guys said following
Hi Katrina, generally, if you wait until the transmission has an issue then it's too late. I have a transmission flush machine and to flush out the trans you're looking at around $750. If the valve body requires replacement, the part is $2200 plus about $600 to fit.
I asked if a second hand valve body would be worth trying he said Unfortunately Volvo said the transmissions never needed to be serviced so no one did and then they failed. I do quite a few flushes during routine servicing. The valve body is all the solenoids that change the gears. Very doubtful youd find a good unit and I wouldn't be interested in fitting one.

Really, it may well be an engine mount what you first described.
You can have locals check? Not sure which, I'm sure it will be answered here.
If your guys will do correct fluid change for that price then try it. You won't get resets done, a software in the gearbox thingo... But, that can wait, see how it goes.
Engine mount not cheap, but if from USA much cheaper.
I don't understand a power flush machine, I'd hope it's a drain and auto fill machine.
I did mine at 156,000k no problem.

Def not engine mounts it’s the gears you can feel it - not sure what to do at this stage it’s doing my head in lol

Something something

Further
Cheap flush n fill and adaption will tell you if its totally effed
Also when was the last time (if ever) it had a software update from Volvo?
teenymak
Bear I’ve only had the car a couple
Of months so no idea on if any updates but $750 for a flush with machine is an eye opener lol. So an adaptation is the kit you put the link up to?
Ex850R
If connected to a volvo scan tool they reset transmission counter and then adaptations on a drive.
Do the cheap fluid change option. Be sure they use synthetic, preferably Penrite ATF.
Get the thing to an indie volvo shop for scan tool check etc.
Your guys can check engine mounts etc, front strut wear parts etc.

These guys?
I've heard mention of good things.

Thanks snoopy will give them a call

Can thoroughly recommend Rontons. Mike did a fantastic job on wife's S80 V8 when we bought it (was an Adelaide car).
