Helen Hi there I would welcome thoughts and advice about leaving my XC70 in storage for 12 months. I have a friend who could start the engine as often as it needs. Not sure how often. I don't want to sell it as I love the vehicle but don't want to store if it is not recommended or could change the performance etc. Any thoughts??
Philia_Bear Just unplug the battery negative terminal and zero issues for storing it If you happen to have an outlet near where your storing the car a $90 ctek 5amp battery charger maintainer can just be hooked up instead of disconnecting the battery Also when you come back to the car after a year just plan to have a oil change done in as soon as practical

Spac Where will it be stored? The main thing that seems to effect fuel/oil lifespan in a car stored long term is temperature fluctuations. Big temperature variations tend to make tanks and sumps "breathe" as the air heats and cools, drawing in moisture. In this regard, tin sheds can actually be worse than the open air, depending on where you are and the time of year. And when it is run, make sure that it gets up to temperature. If the thermostat doesn't open, then you've probably done more harm than good by starting it. Ideally, it could also be taken for a run around the block at least, to keep the brake rotors clean and stop the tyres flat spotting. Even taking it to the end of the driveway would be useful if a trip around the block isn't possible. Ideally, I would aim for it to be run once per week, but once per month wouldn't be a problem if it is allowed to warm up properly.
Helen Thank you Spac- lots of good information. I will be parking it outside, with a vehicle cover over it. Its in the lower Blue Mountains Sydney. The temps are quite extreme.
Ex850R I wonder how the cover will go with having moisture build up under there? I know naught about the quality of those things. Putting it up on blocks to keep off the ground may be best for the tyres. The battery charger is well worth the investment as it keeps the battery healthy. Ask about biocide at auto parts shop, how much to put in etc.
