I got the motor off of Chris.
When purchasing, it was agreed that it was a motor of "unknown" condition.
Turned out to be quite a sad motor with seized/bent valves and looks like it has eaten a hand full of small machine nuts and washers. Dings and chips in the pistons and dents in the head.
I swapped heads to my old head, put it together and got it running. Took me ages to figure out how to get it running right(ish) with the SU carbs, having never touched them before. Ended up leaning it out until less than a turn from the jet touching the bridge. This did the trick, plus changing out the dashpot oil from ATF to 15w40 engine oil.
It has more compression than the old motor, and breathes much less. Has some pretty severe piston/gudgeon type knocks, but gets better when warm.
3 out of 4 of the freeze plugs on the manifold side sprang a leak, I put screws in the holes with rubber washers and RTV. This did the trick and Chris gave me some new ones as he has them in stock.
Got it holding water and running fairly well considering the condition. Finally got it on the road, registered and some nice new premium plates.
