In simple terms, the “clockspring” is a coiled wire bundle that goes around inside the steering column and provides constant connection between the body control modules and the function buttons on the steering wheel and the airbag. The “clockspring” shaped wire is required to enable the wheel to be turned multiple revolutions without breaking contact. In the “old” days the only contact beteeen the steering wheel and body wiring was the horn button, so a simple ring contact wiht a spring-loaded pin allowed constant contact while rotating the steering wheel.
