So because I'm a nice guy I answered an ad on gumtree and have agreed to try and get an '85 240 GL going - today we managed to get it to start, but it runs for about 30 seconds and then dies. It is an 85 model fitted with CI fuel injection. I've checked the fuel pumps and they are both running and beyond that it has me stumped. I also get a couple of metallic backfires and then it dies. Any suggestions?

Running too rich maybe.

Is this k-jet?

I had the occasional metalic backfire and terrible time making my k-jet wagon stay running. Chucking the fouled plugs in the bin, putting in some decent ones and sorting the timing helped a lot.. was also battling the cold start prob though. But after plugs and timing i had no more backfires. I remember one was bloody loud!

Yup, well I've changed the plugs, cap and leads - and when it starts it runs beautifully but then it stalls...

Check for vacuum Air leaks

Yup, I've gone over them, but I'll do it again.

So many things it could be. Only took me near 3 years to make mine reliable and predictable. Lol
Warm up regulator could be another thing. Might be changing the pressure to something the engine doesn't like as it warms up slightly.
Those CIS troubleshooting charts might be handy.
Can you prevent it from stalling by keeping the revs up or makes no difference?

Fuel filter is a good first step if age of it is unknown or petrol has been sitting for ages

Maybe just screw the throttle up a bit, maybe the idle is just a bit low?
