Sachs Nivomats (now part of ZF) were and are to be found on many different model Volvos (240/740/940 etc).
The self-levelers are extremely robust but, the rubber bellows over the ram/piston deteriorate and break up with time. You can easily get replacement gaiters. However, the problem is to get them on to the piston/ram over the lower bushing. The proverbial camel and eye of the needle come to mind.
Whilst many people suggest placing the gaiters in boiling water and forcing them over the lower bushing it's not a very sound proposition and, the diameter of bottom end of the gaiter is very small.
I have recently read and seen limited pictures showing that the bottom bushing of the Nivomat is screwed on to the piston/ram and that if the bushing is unscrewed it makes a very simple job of replacing the gaiter as it can be just slipped up the piston.
I was just wondering if anyone has any practical experience of replacing the gaiters on a Nivomat by unscrewing the lower bushing, and have they any tips on how to hold the ram/piston in place without damaging it while unscrewing the lower bushing from the piston
Cheers to all, Bob :)

All sorted now.
Should anyone be interested and need to replace the gaiter/boot.
The bottom bushing on a Nivomat does unscrew (with great difficulty!!) from the piston rod. Once off you can easily slip the replacement boot on over the piston and screw back the lower bushing with some thread lock.
