Update- blew my head on the old pac highway last night, 3rd and 4th cyl are milkshakes
May as well upgrade what I can while the head's off, b23a motor,
Anything from 531 head
16v head
Big cam for an NA Carby
ITB setups even
Adjustable cam
Anything better than stock I'll consider

B23a? In what year/car?
What is your budget?

Plate in engine bay says b230 e family but it's carby?

Depends on what's on offer really

It should be K-jet. Throw up a picture?
Oh this is a wanted thread. I don't have anything for sale.
If it's not manual I would just fix it up as is and put money into a manual swap for starters.
The returns for money spent vs power for n/a is very steep. Just throwing on a 531 head will do next to nothing. 16v is a nice bump in power but considerable work is needed to adapt b23/230 bottom end. Maybe if anything swap in a k or h cam - really only suitable for manual car.
If you are genuinely interested in better n/a power, the recipe is head work and compression, with lots of money involved.

Thanks for the advice, it is k-jet and has an m46.
What kind of work is needed for adapting a 16v head as I may have one lined up?
Not interested in crazy amounts of power, considering a twin Weber downdraught or possibly ITBS just for the fun of it really and converting to EFI is too big of a job without just buying a full parts car

How long can the car be off the road? It might be an idea to replace the head gasket and put it back together, then think about go fast mods. These projects take forever, especially in the planning stages

Quicker rebuilt the better, just seeing if anyone has anything ready with them I could pinch. Looked into a 16v swap and you're right there's a fair amount of work to go into it. sourced a few different head options already, if anyone had a k cam that I could grab in the next week or two that'd also be handy
ramrod
Sure, but the cam can be swapped without the head coming off. So you could do that later on as well

If your car is an '83 240GL or GLE, it should have a B23E with a 405 head and a K cam. These are generally considered some of the best top end parts for a non turbo car, without going to aftermarket parts.
Check the casting number on the right side of the head.
Going to a 3.91 ratio rear axle will improve acceleration slightly, advancing the cam by about 6 degrees will make a difference that can be felt, as will fitting extractors.
Beyond that, turbocharging begins to offer much higher results per dollar very quickly.

@pineapple I have some heads on the shelf if you need something to get you out of trouble, I think one might be a 531? The other is a 530 with turbo valves (no performance benefit, they can just deal with hotter exhaust gas)
I'll check tonight. Can sling you some gaskets also (including a head gasket I think). I'm in Eastwood.

If he's staying with kjet, assuming that runs right, there's little need to change the head, if going carb of course. But the $2000 with manifolds and Chinese webers is going to need the 531 decked pretty heavily to be worth it (talking about 45cc chambers) a 530 is already at 46/47 and with the flat top pistons would get it out of trouble. But the 531 flow is superior if you're paying fit everything.
Ultimately, to gain decent power, you need a lower compression motor, adjustable ecu and a turbo setup. Factory stuff all bolts up etc.
