I think I'm going to do the injector seals on my 240 soon and I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading the injectors while I'm at it.
I've heard conflicting opinions - some say that injectors from eg. and 850 are a good upgrade, others say it's not necessary on an NA car.
I'm assuming more modern injectors will have a better spray pattern but I don't really know enough about it, what's the consensus?
ramrod
What supporting mods have you done?
240
Well, none really since it isn't turbo... what supporting mods could I have done?
ramrod
If you said you wanted to make improvements to the standard engine, ie exhaust, intake, camshaft, headwork, ECU chips, and so on, that's where you will find gains because you have increased the efficiency of the engine, so the standard injector capacity won't be able to supply enough juice for the improvements you have made. Since you have made none, the stock injectors are great for your application.
240
OK, that makes sense.
Although it's probably worth me giving a couple more details - the car has LH2.4, a VX camshaft and 531 head. So a little more capable than an "average" 240. In light of that, are other injectors worthwhile?
ramrod
No. Cars that were fitted with the 531 head and VX camshaft used the same injectors as cars that came with the 530 head and M camshaft.
LH 2.4, the 531 head and VX camshaft are all standard road car parts. The head and cam on their own, make hardly any difference to the B230F engine. Only when you get into spending four-figures on engine work (or turbo) is an injector upgrade necessary

What year is the car?
I had a set of T5 injectors and put them in a week prior to T swapping my LH2.4 car - The ECU never adapted to them, best you can do is get yours cleaned & checked. No benefit to messing with then on NA thats otherwise totally stock

It's a 1992.
Sounds like it's best to keep the standard ones then, what's the beat way to clean them?
timbo
We have an injector cleaner and flow tester here at ikes. They need to sit in the ultrasonic bath for the whole day I can clean and flow test them for $15 each

You don't need to upgrade your injectors. Injectors are one of those things that on cars of this era, either the ones you have work (flow enough fuel) or they don't. It's not like there's hidden power to be made by uprating your injectors.
@timbo's comment is valid though, injectors can get partially clogged over time, from debris or varnish in the fuel system, and getting them cleaned and flow tested could be beneficial, but generally I would only do that if I had some reason to think they needed it.
240
I doubt they've been cleaned in over 400k so I'll get Tim to clean them.

Wise move. Periodic maintenance is changing the o-ring seals as well. Not too many people know that rubber doesn't last forever

I see this has already been sorted, but worth noting here that alot of OE injectors on 4 valve per cylinder engines will have a split spray pattern. A 15 degree split is g when you have 2 intake valves to spray fuel at, but I've found it washes the walls of your intake pretty well on a single valve, so you'd probably be going backwards with economy and idle although upgrading to a more modern injector.

@timbo is tomorrow ok for me to drop the injectors into you for cleaning/testing?
timbo
Yeah no probs
