Is it true that you must disconnect the front brake lines in order to work on the front shocks on a 240? The front brake lines run through a solid mount on the strut housing preventing them from being seperate from the strut. Poor design? Or am I missing something.

No. You can change springs and shocks without having to remove the assembly. Iirc removing the guard makes things easier and less likely to damage it.
Or if you must take out the assembly I've heard people cutting the bracket tabs of and then removing the caliper and let it hang to remove the assembly.
Or just disconnect brake lines...

You can do what Jeremy said, but good god why would you do it that way, just disconnect the lines and bleed the system when you're done. If you've rounded the hardline fittings (lots of people do, they're some stupid size), a pair of vice grips on the hardline fittings will work just fine.

I've seen people cut a slit in the mount and then open them up with pliers to remove the lines.

I thought about turning them into C clips instead, for easy removal

Kaplhenke make some removable ones.
