Getting ready to replace all four tyres. Have Stage 1 MTE tune and leaning heavily toward Michelin Pilot Sport 4. I know almost nothing but Standard Tyre size is 205/50/17 right? But is it poss to fit slightly wider? And what would be the impact of the change, if any?
Philia_Bear
225/40/18 fits nice..... on 18" Ford Locust XR5 Rimps and bolts onto the car
I'm running Hankook Ventus RS3 and they blow PS4's out of the water very easily

A 225/45 would be good as it's almost exactly the same circumference as a 205/50, but it might scrub a bit with the wheels at hard lock.

Thank you, but what would be the advantages of fitting a wider tyre? I’m looking for reduced noise but also better handling. What about a 215/45 or 50?
Ex850R
215 ,45 in PS4s will give you quietness and more grip with less chance of rubbing at full lock.
Bridgestone Adrenalin is worth a look too but the PS4 will be quieter I am betting.

Wider tyre means more grip, basically, and can reduce road noise, however I think that's much more heavily influenced by the quality of tyre you buy.

Why do you ask about fitting wider tyres? The Volvo engineers decided that 205/50/17 was the best matched size for the supplied wheels and suspension of your car. So unless you want to buy wider wheels, stick with the OEM size.

You could be right, but it does occur to me that Volvo also set the parameters of engine performance on the theory, no doubt, that these were the best match for the supplied engine, transmission, etc, but I have MTE performance upgrade installed on the car and it just makes the whole vehicle a lot better. Thus, I’m wondering if wider tyres might have similar positive effects without messing with things.

Yet Volvo offered wider and narrower tyres as part of appearance packages with the same suspension....
Get a clue
The stock tyre size is most often driven by business decisions totaly unrelated to engineering and suspension tuning if any follows some time later
When you have any given wheel size there are near always 3 to 4 tyre option sizes acceptable to that rim
Wider tyre means slightly more surface area and slightly more potential grip. Wider frequently means more noise as well
Outright grip and quiet never go together

I think @jamesinc is on the money - tyre quality is going to be a much bigger factor than width. There are plenty of tyre comparison reviews online, so I'd suggest doing a bit of research on different brands in your current size before deciding if you need to go wider.
If you are going for more grip you also need to consider what @Philia_Bear suggested - increasing rim size as well. The down side is that you risk increasing noise with a more performance oriented tyre and ride quality if you go up in rim size and down in tyre profile..

I guess I’ll stick with 205/50/17 since I surely don’t want more noise, and although I drive the car hard on backroads every few months just for the fun of it, it’s mostly city or freeway cruise. Hard to get a bargain on the PS4; better price on re003 by far. Probably the Michelin, though. It’s only money and there are no pockets in a shroud.

I like your thinking!
Check if Michelin is cheaper for the 215/45/17
Or the 205/50/17.
Personally, the wider profile is my choice, I have done this change up on most of my cars.
The change to Michelin PS 3s in std size on my car gave me more comfort, better grip and quite too, they really are brilliant tyres. I expect the PS4 to be a much better tyre by all reports too.
Ex850R
BTW, how much and what attributes has the MTE 1 tune given you?
Ex850R
Just as I thought,
the wider one is more common so cheaper.

Mark sent me the new performance stats but I can't find them. What I do notice most is that the car is a bit more spritely off the line but with front wheel drive and my current tires, its hard to really floor it from a stop. I had the torque limit on the Geartronic removed as part of the upgrade, so it now revs magnificently in 2 and 3. It has a lot of torque left at high speed cruise too. In general, it feels as though the car is awake, whereas before the tune it was powerful and fast but just a bit dull.
Ex850R
Sounds good!
The volvo need a tyre that is more solid tread at the outer edge, less cuts if you will, more block patten r, it gives better control and also will wear less.
The next upgrade for you could be proper wheel alignment for better grip and less tyre wear.
Most wheel alignment places just do a standard alignment whereas a motorsports alignment place can dial in what you need after consulting you on your driving style.
Ash Davies @AshDVS can help you with tips and maybe some parts to enhance your driving style and enjoyment, he is a guru!
And please, a picture or two of the C30!

The biggest issue with going for wider tyres on a stock rim is they will buldge and shift more being past the width of the time strength. So in those cases, a 7" wide rim with a 215 instead of 205 is not going to notice the difference, but 225s will more likely upset handling and not necessarily create better grip.

True
My time on 225s on 7 inch alloys gave me more comfort at the expense of handling.
Still within the recommended sizing iirc but can lead to rubbing.

Fitted 4 205 Michelin PS 4s. Major improvement in handling. Considerably quieter. Expensive but worth every penny.

Nice one
