Mark_Walton56 Hi all, new to OZ Volvo’s, lost track of my 1973 144 GL when I put him into the paint and panel shop for a tidy up and it got ‘lost’ for 8 years, just got connected again by the original paint shop team, the car lives, and is being bare metal stripped for respray. It’s a slim bumper model, and Iam looking for a replacement bumper rubber, any ideas? All help appreciated!
egads Welcome! Looks like a solid car, not sure whether you can get new bumper rubber. Hopefully one of the other blokes will have run across it at some point
egads Found one for the 72 sort, does it look right? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Volvo-676051-bumper-moulding-front-Volvo-140-142-144-145-New-Old-Stock-/112363765346?rmvSB=true
Rob Did yours have the rubber all the way across? or just on the ends. I may have the end pieces but i don't think i will have the centre piece.
Major Ledfoot 1973 bumper rubber is a One Year Only Special for 140s. They used to be a dime-a-dozen, but not any more! For many 140 items, usually you can get bits from the USA, but the 73 models in the US market had a different bumper setup to the OZ / Euro version. Imlachs Wreckers in Melbourne (where classic cars go to die) had a 73 144 in there about 6 weeks ago, with intact bumpers. Alternatively, you could try Nordicar in The Netherlands, but bring your money with you.
1971_144GL I may have a set. But will have to check. I am also getting a 73 next week and will check the condition of the bumper before parting with mine. Pretty rare now. Are you just looking for better rubber, or the whole setup?
Mark_Walton56 SA940;132150 wroteSorry I need to ask this, how did the car get lost for 8 years? well that is a long story, had something to do with a funny marriage, business partially dissolved, moves across three houses, but he kept the car with him all this time! Was lovely to get a call to come and see it in it’s partially stripped form!
Mark_Walton56 Hi to all and for all the information and advice, I actually was hoping there would be a new old stock one piece grooved rubber replacement but like you have all suggested, a bit rare..... I have a really great bumper and the rubber is in great condition but in order to get it off I needed to cut three of the connecting bolts and rusted nuts that hold the rubber on, now will attempt a rubber rebounding company and rebound new screw sets into the original rubber? Amazingly I have been quite successful with finding replacement parts for those that have suffered with disintegration or rust over the past 8 years, next will most probably be a bit of bling in the form of a non cracked dash top, and a GT dash! I apologise for not replying individually as your comments came in but it took me a bit of time to figure out how to reply! Thanks again, Mark
Major Ledfoot I got my 142s old dash tops re-covered by Dashboard Recovering Services. It is just like brand new. Dashboard Recovering Services Unit 3/ 4 Cunneen Street Mulgrave NSW 2756 0409 171 165 No connection - just a very happy repeat customer.
Mark_Walton56 Wow! That looks great! Will certainly give them a call, saw that you are Katoomba based, must drop by, I’m in Springwood! Thanks for the photo, feeling inspired again,
Major Ledfoot I'd love to have a stickybeak at your 144 one day. BTW, the front bumper moulding (ie rubbers) and retainers are still available from www.gcp.se (which I never knew till now) p/n 685739 for the front bumper moulding - 282 SEK each p/n 688548 for the retainer - 50 SEK each
Mark_Walton56 Hi pgpzfm, yep, will make that happen, when it’s back with me and alive again. Have had a chat with the Dashboard Recovering Service, they are happy to do it and the dash will head that way in a bit. Hope you are well, Mark
Mark_Walton56 Harry, my 1973 144 is getting there! Body has been stripped and all take off parts painted, I’ve been sourcing bits for the DJet and it’s ready for reassembly, my nephew Eric found a few sets of the Cibie tail lights and I’ve managed to get a really good set from them, they cleaned up and will look good when they go back on. I’m setting the car up as a rallyish themed, and the dished Mota Lita, grille with cutouts for fog lights all may find a place on Harrywhen it all goes back together. Did a stack of work on the boot trim and it has come up brilliantly, pity it won’t be seen too much......I’ve refurbished my 70s Cibie Supa Oscars from my early rallying days and fabricating an alloy light bar to mount them on. The Recaro Royals currently in the car will be replaced with a set of period Recaro competition seats to set off the GT dash. Time wise we will start the reassembly over Christmas! A doner 144 had air conditioning so that is being readied for installation when I get Harry back. Looking forward to the next few months!
Mark_Walton56 Steering box redone, and because I’m running a 30/70 cam I use a vacuum reservoir, colour was because I had a spare tin of blue hanging around and thought what the heck...
