  • Then where would I put my tools? :p I have big beams in my garage that didn't allow it to go high enough with the car jacked up. Cheers for the heads-up though.
  • Ah, that makes sense.
  • Are you building an 8v turbo or still going 16v?

I actually Plan to do both. I couldn't decide which path to choose until the 940 SE came up at the right price. But I have another 360 that just needs a few things to get registered, then I plan to go down the 16 valve N/A route with that one, when the time comes.

  • Sounds good. The 8V B230ET will be a good motor. The ET should have a 531 head and a VX cam which is a decent combination. I cant remember if they have skinny rods or not, either way as long as you are sensible then it should hold together.

I'm unsure why an Australian 92 940 would have an et. Maybe a typo? Either way if it's original to the car it's a 13mm rod motor.

  • That great to know as I was a little concerned.. but it definitely has b230ET on the block.
  • B230ET was kind of like the upgrade that the B230FX was. B230ET is basically a B230FX but instead has sodium valves, dished pistons and the ports for the oil to the turbo. IIRC the B230ET runs 9.3:1 compression compared to the 8.7:1 of the B230FT.

    Will be a great motor.

    9.0:1 actualy, a b230ft is 8.7

Unsure on your description though Slowbrick, it isnt comparable to the fx motor, as it was around from pre unleaded times.
  • Ah yeah what I mean is that you know how the FX is just an F with a 531 and VX cam? The B230ET is just a FT but with a 531. So what I mean is that the bottom ends for each variety is the same but what makes them different is the addition of the 531. That's what I meant.

Nope, a b230et runs different pistons combined with a 531 head maybe, the 530 is more likely to be used, you lose 0.3 compression on the 531 head, so in the case of the engine nickm built, runs 9.0:1 c.r. With b230et pistons, But has a 531 head, so with the 530 (check the head out for a number on the exhaust side cast into it) it is at 9.3:1.
  • Hmm you could be right. Either way a B230ET isn't a common thing.

Hey thanks @Vee_Que I will inspect the head next time im in my garage. Cheers to you and @Slowbrick for the discussion of information. It's really great to see how big the volvo community is and how much knowledge can be siphoned from your glorious brains.
@Vee_Que I have been corresponding with Dai from classic swede regarding the flywheels. He mentioned that he hasn't used any other flywheel beside the dished LH2.4 and advised there is clearance issues with the clutch pressure plate touching the bell-housing when using other flywheels? have you heard of this issue? I assume it is 360 specific..

That could make sense being a torque tube.
  • Just checked the head and it has 531 on it. Good news for me. I'm just hoping I have the 13mm rods!

As Slowbrick mentioned, the b230ET isnt a common thing. All part index's I have seen dont even list the 940 as having a B230ET engine... Can anyone chime in if they have owned or seen a 940 with a factory B230ET?

There will be a casting date on the engine block, the car itself looked like a normal 940se

I Just had a look on the block, any idea where the casting date may be located?
  • Found it. Says 84 12 19
So i am assuming this one has the 9mm rods?

  • Interesting...so it definitely wouldn't be the original engine from the 92 940. How it got there is anyone's guess?

Yeah. It's not original. Bugger. Mid thrust motor too.
