Looking for a good condition transmission to put in my 1974 164.
Need an AW71, that's the 4 speed auto preferably the "L" version as that has the lockup on the torque converter.

I'm pretty sure the lockup function is not ECU-controlled, it's a passive feature that engages when the torque converter spins above a certain RPM.
Rob
I thought the lock up converter was electronic?
I have been wrong before though

I'm trying to google it but the only reference to electronic controlled ones is the later unit in the 960s etc.

I'm not 100% sure, but I have run an AW72L before, and it did not have any kind of input for an ECU or TCU.
Nor am I aware of any of the 2/7/9 series having any kind of TCU or an ECU that outputs a lockup signal.
But maybe there are some mid-90s 900-series that have it?
Rob
googling suggests I am wrong. :)

So the lockup torque converter version is preferred?

The L boxes will give you lower RPM cruising on the highway, I'd say if you can find one in good condition they're nice.
Edit: slightly better fuel economy too

I have a couple of good AW71's but I'm in Victoria.

As far as I am aware the only electrics on the 71L box relate to the overdrive lockout solenoid, which can keep the gearbox out of top gear for towing or mountain passes.
Ipd used to have a metal plate that removes this feature if you wanted to keep the transmission totally independent of the electrical system.

How many kms on them Angus? Any of them Ls?
Essbos - my 1990 740 has this button and I use it all the time. It would be a great feature in the 164.

AW aka Toyota A4x series transmissions use an "E" in their nomenclature if they're electronically controlled.
So the AW72L is a mechanical lockup, but the AW72LE is electronic control with lockup. Volvo never used the AW72LE.
The AW30-40LE and the AW30-43LE used in the 960 /S90/ V90 are electronic and lockup.
Lockup and non-lockup converters are not interchangeable, according to the book.
jamesinc
I can also confirm the torque converters are not interchangeable.

I have four non lockup converter AW71's, all have between 200 and 300k on them, typical of 25+ year old vehicles.
One is personally tested and known to be good, another is personally tested and good aside from an occasional harsh first to second shift.
The other two are untested by me, but previous owners of the cars said they worked fine, and the cars were taken off the road for unrelated reasons.

Also to clarify, the AW70 and 71 are three speed transmissions with an electrically controlled overdrive gear, giving four speeds in total.
The L versions have a lockup clutch built into the torque converter, which prevents the converter from slipping, under high speed light throttle cruise conditions, to give the car similar fuel economy to a manual model, under those conditions only. This is hydraulically controlled.
Neither of these functions are controlled by any sort of ECU. The overdrive solenoid is controlled by a switch and relay.

Hello Angus. I am interested. How often do you get to Geelong or Sunbury. Otherwise do you have a good local courier?

This +1
I've pulled apart a few now 100% sure that the L does not use electronics

If you would like a factory oil cooler from a 740T I have one here. $30 in Melbourne. Someone else from Tassie is grabbing some parts off me so there may be an easy freight option if you have a few weeks to wait. All of the pipes are included, only thing is the radiator in a non-turbo is a touch further forward than the turbo (to allow for the intercooler) so a couple of adjustments (bends) may be needed. and it is a 164, so I know not the radiator to gearbox measurements.
One quick question, which I assume the more knowledgeable among us will know, does the AW7x from a 740 have a bell housing for a slant engine, where a 164 has an upright engine? I am really not sure on this, though thought it best asking.

Yes, all the 240 740 and 940 engines are angled 15°.
Rob
164 engine is also a different shape, size and bolt pattern.
