There's multiple factors on why Rbs are not as good as a 1j/2j, most of which revolve around the fact now there is a huge premium for a motor even over a 1/2j, which I've seen plenty of complete 1jgte motors for $1000, I never see good rb20/25s for under 2k, usually with no assesories. They have oiling issues, the internals are not as durable as the Toyota, they are not as good a rod ratio. And most people who did use them, blow them up and go to a 2j or ls motor for competition use. The only good box to use is the vg30 box with a custom adaptor at huge expense as well. The Toyotas have multiple options that don't cost as much. Of course you can use an rb25 box, but they are also worth drug money.
Unless of course it's on a GT-R. Which is all well and good, but every one ends up with a forged built bottom end to make 500hp at the engine. Which a 2j does with stock internals.
B230s are not perfect, but they don't have a skyline/gtr tax, and they are the standard motor for the cars in question. Which is the original point, the guy who built it, spent a lot of money to buy the overpriced motor, then broke it, (how? They all seem to break) and sold it with a broken motor. This guy chucks another motor in and it still only makes what a
B230 with a t3/4 and an aftermarket computer would make. With no other changes.
Unsure about the reliable bit Ryan, once again, this car is on its second converted motor.
Ah Tom, you're the one who came in here. And then tried to discredit me, so your response is pathetic and overused by people like you.
Just because it did a rod bearing that doesnt make the motor unreliable. Maybe it had an oil starvation issue from going around corners too hard at too high RPM. Maybe it was run low on oil because of whatever. Or maybe because its a mechanical object it just decided to break. We all know the 2J is a competent engine. Thats well known. It doesnt mean the RB is a total piece of shit.
Hell I have a B6284 sitting on my garage floor that has far less potential over a LS or 2J that will be going into my 240. Sometimes people build things because they like them. From a performance standpoint me putting a B6284 into my 240 is a stupid move because it will probably only really make 300hp. An LS will do that all day everyday without the need for a turbo or any real special fab. But I want the B6284 in the same way this guy wanted the RB. Its not the end of the world for people to build things they like.
