New to the Forum. Had S60 LPT Before and now a C70 with an HPT.
Recently Purchased the C70 at Auction. The car was registered and ran well and on my way back home all good. Did a check couple of days later and Coolant bottle had no coolant in it. Topped up and thought the water evaporated. The temp Guage works fine and starts low and moves to middle and stays there throughout the trips.
Checked all the hoses for leaks, checked cap, seals on the temperature sensor, checked for coolant in the engine - all clear. The Funny thing is: The C 70 spews coolant out of the bottle if I turn key to off straight after a trip ( possibly sill heated enough to Spew). If I wait 10 mins wait for the cooling fan to cool the engine and turn off All is well.
Any ideas on what it could be causing it?

Did you pull the thermostat and check it?
If it's all busted up, get new one.
That's common.
That it blows out a lot of coolant could just mean it's not burped properly from filling it up, it takes a while and constant refills sometimes.
At worst it's a blown head gasket.
An analysis of the fluids can be done by a good indie volvo shop to see if they are mixing. A compression test will help too.
Maybe the water pump has broken vanes?
Where are you?

Thanks, Snoopy. I am in Ryde, Sydney
Have driven it well for 30-40 mins, temp is in the middle of Guage and each time if cooled after the drive all is well.
Few ops on the forum said they spew more on the highway - might give it a go this weekend with spare coolant bottle in the boot.
Is there an easy way to check the water pump? Have pushed against the radiator hoses and they have good pressure
The thermostat seems to work as i can hear the fans kick in mid-drive. Could it be a housing or spring failure?
Will get both the thermostat and compression check done soon and report back. Love driving the car so I will keep driving and cooling. You are right about the refill process, got few large burps out after each refill.

The pump I mentioned in passing, not a cause for this but it should be changed as should the thermostat and temperature sender too.
The radiators are not great at this age either, end tanks leak.
I hope its not serious for your sake, as you enjoy it so.
These motors, if still going OK with problem like this can go OK for some time if looked after and not pushed hard.
Prepare for a replacement motor maybe.
Talk to Mike @Philia_Bear, he may be able to help at his place, could have replacement bits etc.
@iceton1975, Mark will have motors too if needed.

Is the car running 50/50 mix or water?
If your not sure... drain everything and replace with 50/50
For fuel efficiency reasons Volvo aims for the cars to run at 107C
Because of this... if you shut it off and its just got water in it... it will tend to want to spew out if you remove the cap right after stopping
Also... the expansion tanks have a 100% failure rate after ~10 years
if the expansion tank looks brown or cracked... replace it...
VolvoDeger
They should never spew anything out if cooling system is operating correctly, so don't be mislead by that information.

Thanks, Bear. Will do that this week and report back.

The Coolant expansion tank looks brown and though stable- worth replacing during the flush. Have Ordered the expansion tank and Cap waiting for delivery. Once Delivered I will do a replacement and coolant flush. Fingers crossed this should help.
Looking for a guide for reprogramming the remote after a new battery and case - any tips?
VolvoDeger
softare required for new remote but battery replacement shoud work fine

Installed the new Coolant Expansion Tank and Cap today. Found small cracks in the top connector and lower bottom connector. So far only on idle and getting the car to temp. Have noticed the heat is lower in the engine bay and the fan clicks in later. Fixing the small leaks and the new cap has helped retain pressure in the tank much better. No Leaks or spewing at temp (Previously would spew at temp if I turned the car off when at temp).
Have however found condensation and light flow into the Expansion Tank at higher temps (Just before fan clicks on) flow is from the small tube travelling from top of the radiator to expansion tank top port. Is this normal?
Will take it on a long run tonight and see how it goes.
Ex850R
That's from the thermostat.
You have new thermostat don't you?
Plus coolant temperature sensor CTS should be new.
brock
My C70 has flow through the top tube into the expansion tank, it is normal as far as I'm aware.
Ex850R
Yes it is.
akalluri
Thanks, Snoopy Thanks Brock
Took it for a longer run (40 min) yesterday and it went well without any issues (No Spewing or warning lights). Next step is to take it out on the highway for a good run. Have ordered the Thermostat and CTS and Waiting for delivery.
Have purchased an OBDII Bluetooth reader and found the port in the side compartment to take the readings. Is there any good software to read the codes and do the trip analysis?
Ex850R
Better to sit it in driveway, cap off, let it burp out when it cycles through the fan actuation.
Best software is volvo Vida with a DICE unit as obd2 only gives generic codes.

Thanks, Snoopy. Got the obdII adapter installed and tried out an app that came with it - Torque. Looks like a nice program that can track the coolant temps, transmission temp, air temp for me live on the Android phone over Bluetooth.
Burped the system and took the car for a ride. Starting temps was 50c. warmed it went up to 80c. Pushed the car for 35 mins and temps went to 90deg. Few mins at idle and temp came down to 84c. Pushed it further for another 20 mins and temps went up to 110c. After stopping I checked the tank in the engine bay and it was very hot - Max coolant temp seen so far was 110c.
All through the session - no issues with spewing and coolant loss. so I think the coolant loss and spewing were caused by the leaks in the hoses to the tank and loss of pressure in the system. The coolant flow is constant when at high temps (Anything over 80c).
Got the remote working also - Thanks Deger
Ex850R
Success!
Keep an eye on the coolant hoses, in fact, get some new ones, with all other leaks fixed the rest of system will strain with old bits. Don't be surprised if radiator end tanks leak....
Plus heater core.
I'm about to try out the cheap aluminium radiator from gp racing on ebay. They are local to me so pickup is good. Their intercooler is, kool! Works well. Cheap too.
ICEDVOVO
Those GP racing aluminium radiators are excellent value.
My son put one in his project MR2 as genuine parts no longer available.
Looks impressive too, all that nice shiny aluminium and new black Mackay hoses.
BTW the aussie made Mackay hoses are a big hit with volvo guys in the states.
Ex850R
Who sells the hoses here? Any auto shop?
Must investigate!
egads
Seen them in SCA, Repco and Autopro so probably everywhere
