Massey165 My 940 auto transmission has been getting harder to get out of park and now it is stuck in park. Anyone have any ideas on how to get it going.
gavinh Is the knob seated property? This happened to a v70, and the knob wasn't seated thus stopping the interlock button from disengaging
Major Ledfoot What sort of shape is your transmission mount in? FWIW, this is the AW71 - the rods at [6] run to the shifter. The rods [6] end up at the shifter as rod [51] and rod [53].
Spac It's likely the shiftlock release or whatever it is called. Designed to stop the transmission being taken out of park when the ignition is off (parked cars and roll always, etc). There's a plastic pin that locks the shifter in park, and a solenoid releases it when the ignition is on. The plastic pin can get damaged and then it doesn't withdraw properly. It's fairly easy to see once the console is removed.
Massey165 Thanks guys, I will investigate, usually once I put my foot on the brake, it will release, I managed to get it out of park after 15-20 attempts. I know it will happen again if I don't fix.

Brad I think all 940s had the shiftlock function. It won't release unless the ignition is on and foot on the brake. When you apply the brake while in park you should hear a faint click down at the shift lever. That is the shiftlock releasing. You can release it with the little plastic lever hidden at the bottom behind the bristles. You still need either the ignition on or your foot on the brake though. There should be a little label with "Shiftlock release" printed on it.
gavinh Also could be the little electrical solenoid not disengaging when the ignition and brake are applied.
Vee_Que I've pulled apart enough 940s to know a shift lock does NOT exist, maybe on a late 960 or S90, but the aw71/70 shifter only has the rod inside the gearbox itself. More likely the spring to allow retraction has failed in the box.

Spac Yep. I got caught with the 16V wagon I wrecked. Had removed ECU and ignition computer, so the shift lock was engaged. Had to pull it all apart to break it.

I've wrecked/pulled apart 15 7/940s and not come across an extra solenoid. So your one is an outlier.
