My 1988 LH2.2 B230F has very suddenly developed cold startup issues. It turns over but just seems to cough and splutter and not start. If it's a warm day it will fire right up and idle and drive perfectly, right up to high rpm. Is there a temp sensor for the ecu that might have let go? I replaced couple of them recently.

It could be, though failed ECT usually makes warm start hard and cold start is okay. You can try unplugging the sensor, which is located on the intake side of the head, under the manifold, I think between piston 3 and 4.
Alternatively it could be a stuck Idle Control Valve. You can clean the ICV with carby cleaner.

Those symptoms sound like a failed coolant temp sensor, or the wire to it.
