My XC90 V8 (MY2007) is due for a service soon according to its resident nanny every time I start it, and the last owner’s garage used Hi-Tec Synplus 0W-30 regularly. This seems unavailable where I am and so I’ve asked the forum for opinion about an appropriate oil and thanks to those who have given some general guides. But I wonder what other V8 owners out there are using, specifically? Clearly, I want to use something conforming to ACEA A5/B5 and I’m thinking Penrite Full Synthetic 5W-30 (currently a good price on eBay/SCA) or another if there is a general consensus. Often comes down to personal preference and I know we can go a bit overboard on oil choice. Car’s done 177,000 k’s, existing oil in engine is very clean and I just want to do right by the poor thing.

Penrite HPR10 and never anything else
It does not get cold enough in any part of Australia to justify anything thinner

Thinner is used for emissions and fuel economy purposes. So you can use hpr5, I am a big fan of Penrite also.

Decided on Penrite HPR5 5W-30 Full Synthetic. Good price on eBay/SCA recently $37/6L. Now waiting to pick it up.

Well, I have to correct that - I've been looking at too many oil specs from too many companies and my brain got fuzzy. There is no HPR5 5W-30. There is an HPR5 5W-40 and HPR0 0W-30 and a Full Synthetic 5W-30 (which is what I have ordered at $37/6L - on special - and is incredibly cheap for a FS oil). Didn't want the 40 weight viscosity (although Penrite tech rep recommended that) and temps are rarely so low to warrant a 0W. The Full Synthetic meets ACEA A5/B5 and I guess I'll find out how good it is later.

10w50 is rated down to -25c
Where the hell does it get below that in australia?
30sae on the otherside is getting stupidly thin at 110c that all white block/fwd volvo cars eith an efan aim for when sitting in traffic

Takes a while to read this through but it is really interesting. Thanks.

I use Penrite Full Synthetic 5W-30 in my C30. As you said it's ACEA A5/B5 rated, which is good for economy and long drain intervals.
For me, it has a few other advantages: It comes in 6L which is perfect fill for my T5, and it's reasonably priced. My engine is still tight as, so no reason to go to a thicker oil.
