Hi all,
I road tested the car for many K's before I bought it.
Yesterday the motor started to squeal from rear(?) of engine intermittently. Like a dry washing machine bearing.
Turned motor off and a winding down of a fan sound is heard from rear of motor. It's not a Turbo.
Any tips or hints as to what the sound is?
(It's a 1997 S40 wi 102 000kms on clock. Has done 17000kms in last 5 1/2 years).
Thanks chums,
M.

So far ...
It sounds like this - I got from Youtube:
timbo
Sounds like the common pcv failure. Quick test is to take the oil cap off while the engines running, the noise should stop. There will be vacuum present in the crankcase you will feel it pulling off the oil cap

Solved.
Sound has disappeared.
Still, if I start the car to and turn motor off within about one to two mins, there's a winding down sound from behind the engine - a puzzle but no big worry.
